So upset
My first post for a while so sorry for that firstly. I am currently again having problems with Vinnie, I dont know if there is a bitch in season or if the female we walk with daily is about to come into one, but for a few days now he has been acting differently and this morning I got down on my knees to pick some bits off the carpet, he latched himself on to my back and was bunting the back of my neck, although he has done this before albeit not so bad,it was the aggression that he showed towards me that really scared me and for first time ever I am frightened of him! I must stress he is 5 now and have never intended to get him castrated as have never really had a problem. So any advice and reassurance would be very welcome xx

Re: So upset
I can well imagine that would be scary but even with his aggressive noises and teeth you can't be scared of him, he will pick up on that and could push his luck more.
It certainly sounds like he's frustrated (if you know what I mean ) so this will probably pass but in the meantime you need to stay calm and in control. How do you let him know when he's done something wrong, do you have a naughty step as such ? That's the route I would be thinking about so that he knows without exception that this behaviour is not allowed.

Re: So upset
Thanks Ian, yes I told him off and he knows when I say time out I put him in his crate as thats all I use it for now, the best thing I have found is I totally ignore him and wont even look at him, hence to say he has gone very quiet and knows he has done wrong. So guess will persist with this method as he really is holding his head in shame. I will try to remain calm and in control as you say

Re: So upset
Ignoring is the surest way to let a Staffy know your narked with them. Hopefully this has really made him realise he can't behave this way.
I was gonna ask what perfume you were using but thought better of it

Re: So upset
Yes Liz I am just so worried about doing it now at 5 and dont want to risk the fact he may become worse I know it the obvious answer but have heard stories about castration making a dog more aggressive,,,, but then again I am no expert

Re: So upset
firstly, it wasn't aggression he was showing you, it was sexual frustration.
secondly, if you feel that you can't cope with the behaviour, by all means get him castrated. His age isn't a problem as long as he isn't normally nervous/aggressive.

Re: So upset
Firstly I am aware he was showing sexual frustration, why else would he mount my back...... and secondly I did not say in any way I could not cope with the behaviour I have always persevered with him at difficult times and will remain to do so. I will see now how things go as to the decision of castration ,,,, thank you all for your advice

Re: So upset
Impulse has never worked like that for me Inez I think by crating him you have done the right thing, poor Vinnie has just got the hormone hit It's up to you about castrating him, trouble is so many people walk their bitches at busy times in season. I used to take Katy out at stupid times to avoid other dogs!

Re: So upset
There may well be cases of it but I have not myself come across a case of a late neutered dog becoming aggressive as a result. At Danaher we have dogs of all ages neutered and if one became aggressive for any reason I'm sure we'd hear of it.
It's no secret that I'm pro neutering, I think most people involved in rescue are. Frustration adds another reason - it does seem kinder to me not to ask him to deal with it any more. However, I can also understand your reluctance so take your time and think it over.
I've just noticed from you original post that this happened while you were picking bits off the carpet. I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned before as it is a bit obvious - housework is known to be fraught with all sorts of dangers. Avoid it at all costs is my advice!

Re: So upset
Vins quite a placid dog id would understand had been bad with other dogs but he is always sociable. Theres a lot of pros and cons to neutering im all for spaying and or neutering but in certain circumstances ie if a dogs being rehomed/rescue like mia . Or if they might be unmanageable and theres no other option

Re: So upset
Mine's been neutered since he was 6 months and he still thinks bitches in heat are super-interesting. SO many bitches in heat round where I live at the moment, maybe they've synced up?

Re: So upset
Oh Inez i'm sorry you're feeling a bit worried, hope you're feeling a bit better now? Has it happened again? As with Liz, I am pro neuter also and would think that it will settle this issue if it is sexual frustration. Although, as you know Bug is known to hump and she is a spayed female! She tends to do it more if she's stressed or over excited, she can sometimes be quite rough with it, depending on the circumstances leading up to it (high cortisol from a stressful walk or not having a good run about off lead). Bug knows "off" and we redirect as we would with any other behaviour, but the intensity of this incident does sound more so than usual.. Hug! xx

i'm sorry, i didn't mean you couldn't cope - that was bad wording on my part! my apologies!
i meant that if you find the behaviour unacceptable (and most people would, to be honest!), then castration may be an answer & his age isn't a problem.
you could ask your vet to give him a chemical castration injection to see if it will help - then, if it calms him down you can go for full castration.

Re: So upset
Cheers Rach and so glad to see you here and for your input,,,,,, no it hasnt happened since and now you say about over excitement we had been on a good lively walk so I think maybe it was more that than sexual,,,,,,, I have been very authorative in a silent way last few days with him and seems to be doing the trick watching his body language also and redirecting with something else i.e a toy and play ,,,,,, so far so good but I will still be considering all options regarding castration xxxRachel33 wrote:Oh Inez i'm sorry you're feeling a bit worried, hope you're feeling a bit better now?
