Walkies
Hi all, well Kauto's just over 4 months now and we love him to bits. Has his moments though as I'm sure they all do.
Couple of problems we're having and probably normal.
1 - He's ok walking on the lead but as soon as we encounter people he pulls to get at them. Every single person we see. I know he just wants to say 'hello I'm a Staffy, do you want to be my friend' but I'm worried people are thinking we don't have control of him and that he's dangerous. Is this normal and something that gets better over time?
2 - Jumping up at visitors and even us when we get home. Trying to get him to sit before we open the door and stay, which he does but only for a few seconds and then he's off jumping up at them.
Any comments welcome

Re: Walkies
Hi, we're still going through this with our 11 month old. But it's much, much better than it was.
Do you have him on a collar or harness?
As far as jumping at people what we do is to get them in and sat down with treats. She's still very excited but it helps.
It never really does go away though. Our old boy never stopped thinking every visitor was his!

Re: Walkies
He's on a collar and lead at the moment. We took him to a 10k run today to watch a friend and he was still all over the place to the point where did a backflip as I was stopping him jumping up at a friend haha.
Thought it would confuse him with lots of people but to no avail.
Hoping its normal and he gets used to people and that they're not all there for him.

Re: Walkies
We use a Sporn non pull harness and a half check collar, both attached to a 6ft double ended lead. If decides to pull we restrain with the harness and, if needed, a correction through the collar. We attach both when full control is needed and un clip the collar when it's not.

Re: Walkies
Fairly normal behaviour I'm afraid. The watch me command will help though

Re: Walkies
You can get results with the jumping by ignoring him and when he gets frustrated at no response and all 4 paws are on the floor reward and praise.
Start this with yourselves and make sure you have no contact whatsoever, not even eye contact untill all 4 paws are on the floor. Then reward and loads of praise.
Now the difficulty is going to be with other people. You will need to ask them to do exactly as you do, no contact at all untill all 4 paws are on the floor. It will take time but he should get the message eventually.

Re: Walkies
Thanks everyone, will keep trying the 4 paws on the ground method.
Also on a side note, every time I try and upload a picture of Kauto it ends up in its side. I'm uploading from my iPhone and can't for the life of me work out how to get it the right way round.

Re: Walkies
Lexi used to be a jumper and we did two things. We got training discs and taught her the command 'no' so we would put a treat on the floor and tell her take it. Keep doing this then put 1 down and as she goes for it throw the discs on the floor and say no. She learned that instantly. So when she jumped we said no and she would get down (try to pre-empty it if u can) and also now I make her stay on her bed till people are in and sat down (she is allowed on the sofa so knows not to jump) I trained this by telling her bed and stay, then going towards the door and rattling the handle, then go back to her bed and treat her there so your not breaking the stay. And build up to open the door, open the door and walk out etc. also when I let her out for a wee I make her sit and stay at the door untill I tell her out and I think that helped us.
Good luck xx
