Talking to your dog on walkies
How much do you talk to your dog when out for a walk? I'm often praising Milo or encouraging to play etc, but my hubby is the opposite and says he hardly ever speaks to him at all which I think is a bit sad. He reckons he listens better when he calls him because of it. What's your opinions ?

Re: Talking to your dog on walkies
I moved this to chat Jenny... I think it'll get a lot more responses here.
My Flo is clinically deaf and we all talk to her... I even say in a hushed voice "good girl" when she sits at the kerb... Daft or what

I have full blown conversations with Shéara down the street, he's a good listener and sometimes I even get a whiny reply Probably to say "shut up mum im busy sniffing pee here".

Re: Talking to your dog on walkies
I'm always talking to Bo. It's true it does make dogs less responsive to commands when they hear your voice all the time but he does enjoy a good conversation.
A couple of weeks ago we were coming off the fells down a really narrow path that meets up with the lane in a T junction. Bo was ahead on his long lead when a woman with a dog came into view along the lane and stood at the bottom whilst her dog sniffed around in the grass. Instead of carrying on, Bo sat down on the path right in a patch of mud. I called to him, "Hey! What are you waiting for? That's a crazy place to wait," to which the woman replied, "Er, I was just waiting for my dog to have a pee." I had to explain that I wasn't talking to her, I was talking to my dog...

No thats fine Ian thanks. Arrr lovely Flo, she does reminds me so much of my old staff Bree. I think they actually know what we're thinking they're so canny, we don't need to speak. They see what we say in our eyes

Re: Talking to your dog on walkies
I talk to Harry all the time and he answers me - honestly, we can
have quite a conversation
What troubles me most is that we both seem to know what we
are talking about.
Is it time for me to go to the Funny Farm?

Re: Talking to your dog on walkies
Haha I always wondered if anyone else talked to their dogs while out I seem to be the only one nattering away when I see others with dogs. All they seem to do is shout their dogs names when needed...at least I'm not the only one who enjoys a good convo with a dog

Re: Talking to your dog on walkies
Funny farm? you're already there mate. I talk to Stan a fair bit too, he likes it and our bond is very strong too. He certainly knows what I'm talking about and talks to me too, often without any sounds just eye contact and body language.
Re: Talking to your dog on walkies
I talk to Rocky when I am out with him, sometimes I go through the shopping list or a recipe to try out. I think he gets some comfort from hearing my voice especially when we are in a quiet area besides he understands every word I say anyway and replies to me with a look or a funny noise

I talk to Dizzy all the time OH doesn't tend to as much, but I chat away and yep have made comments before now to Dizz and other people have thought I am talking to them. It's the look I get when I say "Oy stinker what're you doing" its incredible the amount of people that seem to think that is aimed at them
