Bacterial ear infection
So Zeus has been shaking his head and scratching his ear alot the past week or so, I cleaned his ears (as much as I could, he absolutely hates anyone near his ears) with ear flush and gave him piriton on a daily basis etc.
Thing's didn't get better so I took him to the vets yesterday.. along with his very gooey eyes and brown liquid type stuff coming out of his ears.. the vets think he has some sort of bacterial infection.
But, because Zeus tends to get a bit scared/growly and nippy when anyone goes near his ears, they couldn't check them properly, so they have to put him under general and give him a proper look and clean. They're also going to send the gunk coming out of his ear to the labs so they can analyse it and test which antibiotic will work against it.. (all at a sum of £400 just to find out the problem, thats not including treatment!)
Anyone ever had something similar to this before? His ears tend to be letting out some clear (sometimes brown) liquid.
Also, how do people clean their dogs ears? I'm always very cautious as I don't know how much liquid you can put in them to clean them, etc.

apple cider vinegar and water. To make a vinegar and water solution, mix 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar to 2/3 cup of lukewarm water. Wipe the visible part of the inside of your dog's ear with the solution, using a cotton ball or soft cloth.

Re: Bacterial ear infection
Hi all, he had his ear flush under general anesthetic.. they said his ear was pretty bad but have managed to clear it and given us antibiotics.
We picked him up last night and it was a pretty rough night for him, he's been shaking, whining and been zoning out all night.. almost like hes in pain. I thought it'd be better by this morning but hes been sleeping all day, still shaking, still whining, not eating.
Has anyone had experience with general anesthesia and how has their dog reacted? Thinking of taking him back to the vets...

Re: Bacterial ear infection
Poor guy! Next doors Retriever just had a big op and the first 24-48 hours he wouldn't eat, barely moved and wouldn't even go out to the toilet so I don't think it's uncommon for them to be feeling a bit off. Has he gotten any better throughout the day?
Not sure if it will help but Bane had gooey eyes not long ago kinda looked like a mild infection. As soon as we noticed we started wiping half ACV half water solution to just above his eyes and around his ears and also on his paws so that when he scratched at his eyes, it would transfer to them without causing pain and within a week it cleared up!
We also clean his ears with the same solution and it works great at getting rid of his dry scaly skin. It's tough when he won't let you near his ears, otherwise you could ask the vet to show you how to do it properly
Haven't any experience with goo coming out of his ears, so maybe there is an underlying infection! Can't believe the cost of your diagnosis! :O Most of that will probably be for the anaesthetic though I would imagine.
