What type of Staffy is my Prince
Hi guys
Can you help; what type of staffie do you guys think I have? We got our boy from a rescue home when he was a puppy 9 years ago, they claimed he was a pure breed staffie (I hope he's a cross breed to be honest) but we've never seen a staf that looks like Prince.
What do you think?
Irish staf, long legged staf and pitbiull staf mix have all been said, your thoughts?
Hugs and love x

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
Hiya and welcome, first off there is only one type of staffy so he is more likely to be a cross. I must say he looks mostly staff to me. I have removed fb link and added the pic for you. When you have a mo pop alon and say hi here

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
As others have mentioned, there is only one "type" of stafford - otherwise you have a crossbreed. Could you post a side on full body photo?

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
Looks like a pure to me with the head shot and a very good looking one at that. as everyone else has said you either have a pure staff either in or out of breed standard or a cross, i have two crosses myself. the fancy names are just byb slang for "give me more cash its unusual" these are also the sort of poeple that tell you about head splitting and lizard like lock jaw are to be expected...

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
Thank you for your lovely words, Prince isn't well right now, he seems to be in a lot of random pain with his back leg or hip & is yelping, very upsetting.
Going through these photos you asked for has been so nice, let me see if I can work out how to add them to this message.
In regards to there only being one staffie, I did read about that and know it's technically true but we can all agree that they look very different from pup to pup so I guess that's where different names are used (bar selling points booo- we rescued Prince so this didn't happen with us) but by the by he looks like a pitbull staff mix to me, but only a bit. Maybe he is just a chunky monkey staff
Guys I'm not any success uploading pics, help?!
Night night xx

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
I would think it very unlikely to be any APBT in your dog as genuine APBTs are much rarer than people might think, most so called Pit Bulls are really mixes of other breeds to emulalate the American dogs. As has already been said your boy is most likely a Staffy or Staffy x. Why do you hope he's a cross breed over a pure bred? Are you hoping he's a cross with anything in particular? Some lines of the Staffy are enclined to breed taller or heavier dogs than you'll see on Crufts for example but they are still Staffies, most Staffies won't match the measurements shown in most books etc either in height or weight. As for terms like Irish Staff etc it's wind. Irish Staff as i understand it is another name for a Pit Bull Terrier. As long as you love your dog and socialise him and care for him it shouldn't make any difference . ps. get well soon Prince.
Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
Unlikley to be a pit cross as anyone with a pure in the uk wont cross, it will cost you seriouse cash for just a stud. more likley to be a type if thats the case but i dont think so in your boy, just enjoy him and the fun you can have together. above all he is a dog, a staffy dog, enjoy, have fun and love every min you have with him. with a cross your deviating away from the known traits of a staffy which is well known to be a well temperd dog. throwing in another breed into the mix leaves you with traits you may not be expecting. I have two staffy cross siberian huskies, need alot of work or my house will go missing in a giant chewd lump

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
Because he's poorly I'm upset and stressed about it, I guess I thought if I knew exactly what his breed was I might be able to help him or understand his body more.
I want him to live forever which is why I hope he's a bit mixed, I've not had a pedigree dog before & I'm not sure if they stay with us as long. Maybe that's why I've been trying to prove he's mixed for 9 years- he's probably as pure breed as the driven snow bless him.
Yes the rescue home said with the use of a blood test (?) they were able to prove he's a staffie, not entirely sure how truthful that was.
I'm also curious, when people who own staffs meet him they say 'he's not a staff' and he is very big with a face I've never quite seen, he's so beautiful & handsome. We were just wondering as he's our boy!
I really want to send you guys pictures x

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
Looks pretty much Staffordshire to me. Some are more chunky than others, my girl is without doubt a Stafford but not pure or to standard (her head is way too small). They do come in all shapes and sizes but best of all, you have that Staffy love
A blood test probably wouldn't be that accurate nor a DNA test to be honest.
The link below should help you to post some pics:-

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
He's more likely to be an American bulldog cross than a pit bull cross if he is very big and chunky. DNA tests are usually not much to go by, nobody could prove breed 100%. Why he is unwell? Is your vet not able to help?

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
all dogs share 99.8% dna match with a grey wolf so the tests arnt that conclusive, factor in that even in a pure staff you will find dalmation, manchester terrier and old pitbull terrier to name a few that formed the breed . repect to you for wanting to find out about heritage and as it does go someway to help ID potential health problems its even more important if its a cross for breed traits. dont worry, pures live just as long as crosses even though there is some truth in diluting breed health issues. with a cross you may well be introducing health issues from both breeds. tbh its so down to the individual dog and how you look after it with diet excersise etc.wild_child wrote:Because he's poorly I'm upset and stressed about it, I guess I thought if I knew exactly what his breed was I might be able to help him or understand his body more.

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
Thanks for the advice & well wished for Prince.
He seems to have a very sore back leg, the last time about 2 months ago the vet said I'd overwalked him (really?) and he had to be on bed rest for 5 days, he got over it with that & an anti-inflametry injection. But after mum walked him for 45 mins it's happened again, he really cries out loud when he moves. Poor love. He's usually so full of beans.
I have no experience of his beautiful breed so the net is about all I have xx

Re: What type of Staffy is my Prince
Yes you can over walk them beleive it or not. if the ground is hard it can be a real pain on the joints. one thing you can try is a pre walk massage, i do it to mine before a run to get the blood flowing to the muscles. start with the shoulders and rub in circular motions moving back the hind legs. when you get there they have a different muscle mass so move up and down right to the foot to get the tendons supple. my guys will almost fall asleep and fall over by the time i get to the back feet now but were nervey in the begining
