Just need a bit of advice
Hi
We have had our girl for exactly a week now,she will be 7 weeks on Wednesday, she is a bit young, but mum was struggling, she is eating well, happy healthy and dosen't want for anything, loads of toys, but she has a thing about feet, bare feet, socks, shoes, slipper, trainers, boots, it doesnt matter she will have em. Now we did have an issue with her biting but we just replace our finger or hand with a toy,or if that dosent work we where ignoring her for a minuete or so, its been working and the biting is getting better, the problem with feet is because she is so small and quick you have to pick her up to get her off, if that makes sense, and it just seems to much like a cuddle to me, I tell her NO! and show her my index finger, put her down and she is straight back on your feet. tonight I put her in her cage/crate a couple of times and eventually she fell asleep, I wont hear from her now until about 6am.
Should I carry on with the cage stratagey tomorrow, or is there somthing else I should try first
Thanks in advance
Damo

Re: Just need a bit of advice
Maybe something that puts her off like lemon or a diversion from your feet like a sock on a piece of string. I don't think using the cage as a break will be good in the long term as she'll see that as punishment
Re: Just need a bit of advice
My girls 12 weeks now and she was very nippy in the beginning too, i have been saying a firm NO and ignoring works but you have to be consistent and it does feel as if you are saying it over and over and over LOL but eventually it does work. Ruby also loves feet and socks etc again just a firm NO (take it off them) and or once she leaves i praise her. Replacing with her on toys also works. I have used the crate a few times not all the time just when she may have a mad rage and i cant calm her, i put her in but i dont yell or say anything when i do its only for a time out with a toy.

Re: Just need a bit of advice
I wouldn't put her in her crate when she is misbehaving as you want her to see it as a good place.
Have you got a stair gate you could put her behind for a minute for a timeout? Or another room?
Bane was obsessed with feet and any kind of baggy trouser leg. You could walk past him and he would pounce on you and be swinging off your legs We just said 'No' in a firm voice and then picked him up and put him in the next room behind the stair gate for a minute or so.
If you can start training with him, teaching basics like sit, you can start to distract him away from your feet by asking him to sit for a treat.
They do grow out of it!

Re: Just need a bit of advice
I echo the sentiments above and here is a link that should help. Having everyone in the house act the same way everytime is essential so the pup will not get confused.

Re: Just need a bit of advice
You're lucky, ours was doing this in the summer!!
It's a puppy thing that they do grow out of with a little guidance, and a little bit of deodorant sprayed on your shoes.
Don't put her in her cage as a punishment, use a different room that's close to where you are at that time so you're not dragging her half way round the house. Sometimes it's easier to leave them and you leave the room.

Re: Just need a bit of advice
We have made a good bit of progress with Leia's foot fetish, to the disapointment of my teenage son, I have insisted that if they go in the kitchen, they must wear shoes, no bare feet or socks, that way no one can get hurt or be to jumpy around her, and we are literally walking away and ignoring her, if she carried on or attached her self to the shoe it would be a loud ouch (youngest son) or a firm No! and index finger. she has got a bit over excited and started to growl and wragg so then we would replace with a toy, if that didnt work then it had to be 60 second time out in her crate, I know some have said dont do this but we have given her the kitchen as it is the safest place for her and sometimes we cant just leave the room, we really focused on this problem all day yesterday, she really got the idea of it very quickly, she is still going for shoes today but she a lot easier to distract or respond to No! No time outs either, which I am really pleased with, I think its difficult because at only 7 weeks, she should really still be playing with her brothers and sisters.

Re: Just need a bit of advice
Harley was very nippy up until about 12-13 weeks he loved our feet and legs too lol what we did was to get a tub of treats and every time he went to bite us we would say to him where's your treat pot and this would distract him and I would make him sit and give paw

Re: Just need a bit of advice
Sounds like you are doing a grand job Damo, only thing i would suggest is using the toilet instead of the crate. it has to be instant and no more that 60 seconds or they will forget what they are in there for. clear out the bleach etc and it will just be a boring place to be. you can get away with as little as ten second time out in there for it to work and calm them down

Re: Just need a bit of advice
Baxter is 7 months and still plays with feet etc a firm " you'll go in your bed" usually puts a stop to it. If she's only 7 weeks you've got plenty more fun to come, just stick with it it does get better, slowly

Re: Just need a bit of advice
Thanks for the advice folks, she did ever so well last night, we had a few friends over for New Years, the plan was to leave Leia in the kitchen and us sit in the lounge, but most parties end up in the kitchen, and when you got a cute puppy then no one wanted to leave her, she got loads of attention, and the shoe biting wasnt an issue at all, we are so pleased with her, she was very excited this morning, but a good firm No! has been enough, as someone has sugested using the toilet Im going to try our front porch for time outs rather than her cage now, thats if she needs one

Re: Just need a bit of advice
Sounds like you are doing a great job You're correct in that usually she would still be with her mum and siblings so they would have taught her more about biting and playing.
We were in the same boat as we got Bane as just over 6 weeks. As you have probably noticed they are very intelligent
