Although Maddie is good with other dogs i'm worried she won't like a pup being in her house and getting attension from me, am i worrying about nothing or what and how should i bring him into the house......... Re: i'm new here and need advice
Just always watch them when they are together especially if there are toys around. Sometimes with two dogs you have to keep all toys away as they may fight over them. There may be a jealousy issue or not. When I got Lola, Oliver did not like her and he growled alot. He was jealous. I slowly increased there time together from very little to now full time over a month. But I still gotta watch them with toys. Especially rawhide and other food type toys.
But also, my dogs are UKC registered APBTs.

Re: i'm new here and need advice
i dont think you will have much problem really first couple of month just watch them make sure your female dont go over the top & hurt him
Re: i'm new here and need advice
i think you only get issues when you have 2 males or 2 female normaly a male & female get on well, i've got 3 dogs
Re: i'm new here and need advice
Before you introduce them get two cloths. Rub one on Maddie & let the new pup live with it for a couple of days & rub one on the pup & leave it for Maddie to get used to over a couple of days. That way, neither will be a total stranger - the scent at least will be recognisable.
Then just introduce them gently & quietly. Try to give a little more attention to Maddie than to the pup - she'll appreciate it, and the pup won't know any different!
Has Maddie been spayed?

Re: i'm new here and need advice
You'll probably find that Maddie'll take the pup under her wing & teach him..........all the wrong things! >

Re: i'm new here and need advice
ye think im worrying about nothing, and im sure she will teach him bad things, although she has never chewed or been aggressive so nothing she will teach him will be that bad. just hope she loves him lol

Re: i'm new here and need advice
Just watch to make sure she doesn't play too rough with him. Although 6 weeks is very young, your bitch will teach him what the mother would have if he'd stayed longer, so I'm sure it'll be ok.

Re: i'm new here and need advice
Hi Sue I have a female Chloe 4 yrs old, and have just bought a Male puppy Blake.. I have added problems cos Blake is deaf and can not hear Chloes warnings... They have settled ok, but like others have said we have occasional problems with high value toys, and occasionally if he jumps at her face annoying her. She growls and growls, but he don't hear and she ends up leaping at him lol....

Re: i'm new here and need advice
I don't have two right now but have done this before. If you can try to introduce the dogs before you adopt a new one and if possible take you older dog with you to the breeder or rescue center. This will help alleviate you fears of them not getting along since you will be able to watch your older dog interact with the one you are thinking of getting. Caryll's idea of wiping a cloth on both so they get used to the scent is an excellent suggestion as well.

Re: i'm new here and need advice
friends of ours have just introduced a pup to their male (although he is 12 years old) he is so tolerant, I think they know that these are lil pups and they know how to be more gentle with them, if Winnie (old dog) gets annoyed with Jet he will grab him and pin him to the ground, not hurting him, just telling him to bugger off! lol

Re: i'm new here and need advice
thanks for advice, im even more worried now my niece had just got a 7 week old staffy pup and i went to see him today (she has a 2yr old mongral) the pup was hanging off the older dog biting her, growling the lot,the poor older dog never snapped back she pinned him a couple of times but not hurting him but the pup never got the message, god hope my pup isnt that bad with Maddie and if he is hope she handles it ok. how do you teach the pup its not right xx

Re: i'm new here and need advice
If the play starts to get too much for the older dog you must step in. Use a trigger word like 'enough' or 'stop', and physically seperate them. If necessary put the pup in another room to give the older dog some quiet time.

Re: i'm new here and need advice
Thank you all, i guess i will take it as it comes might be plesently suprised < iv got a crate for the pup as i crate trained Maddie and it was worth it and helped with house training. i already use the trigger word " enough" with Maddie and it works great. iv found so much usefull info on this site that i didn't know about Staffies.surpose when i got Maddie i was nieve and been spoilt with her as she has always been a good Dog, never had any problems with chewing, house training or even leaving her when i go to work, she's great with people and other dogs.the only problem iv got is she jumps up people with excitment but shes getting better. The main problem iv had is other people preception of staffies (mother in law ) mainly even 5 years on she is still scared of Maddie although she has no reason to be shes a big softie lol when i told her i was getting another she freaked said what if the next one is aggressive OMG some people iv told her it how dogs are raised that makes them dangerous but she wont get it in her head ,all her family have had toy poodles tried explaining even poodle if not reared right could attack and do damage lol oh well enough of my ranting, maybe when i get Bailey she wont come round so often

Thanks nicolalouises i cant wait till i get him and just hope Maddie loves him, once they are trained i dont think it will be much more work with 2 you still have to walk, feed, play with 1 so go on get a play mate for woody lol
i cant wait to walk them together and watch the bond( ) and become best friends.

I agree russdogmum my husband cousin has a toy poodle and it snarls shows his teeth if you go any where near his toy ( his family say ohh his talking to you , i say his about to lunge at your troat lol wouldnt trust it as far as i could throw it. i can take food out of Maddies mouth she can't go near hers when it's eating ....... so who has the nasty dog hmmmm not me lol. think they just think all staffies are the same, iv had dogs all my life, Maddie being the 1st staffie and out of them all she is the most loving and loyal, and in fact the easiest to train think thats because they are so eager for attension, she hates it if i tell her off and goes all puppy eyed lol,she loves nothing more than curling up on the sofa at night for cuddles. enough of me ha ha i can go on

Re: i'm new here and need advice
yep exactly, I guess its just the fact that Staffy's have the physical power to do damage that scares people. but hey, any person has the physical power to do damage and that doesn't stop us trusting people we meet!

Re: i'm new here and need advice
If you are introduceing your pup to your other dog do it outside on neutral terrain then take them for a short walk so they get known to each other and than take them home.
If you are home make some pic's and post them here :-)

Re: i'm new here and need advice
won't be able to take them for a walk as pup won't have had jabs,so will have to be in front garden, vet said it will be ok as maddie fully vacinated and pup is booked for vaccine 2 days after getting him. sure it will be fine, will take Maddie for her walk before bringing him home

Toy poodles are some of the worst!
Good excuse to see less of the mother in law, though! >

Re: i'm new here and need advice
im a little confused when it comes to the debate on long legged staffies too my reggie is alot taller than other staffies that i see around! I read somewhere on the internet about irish long legged staffies and this is now getting me really confused as some people are saying this isnt even a breed just another name for a pit bullcross, i hope this isnt the case cause i dont want him taken away! his family tree is a little bit hazy for me at the moment but im trying my best to find out more, i have been assured that his mother is defo regesterd and all the paperwork to follow but its his dads side im having trouble with.

OK, here's the thing. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is roughly an equal mix of bull dog and terrier. That being said, as genetics can never be fully predicted re: shape/length of leg etc, some staffs will look as though they more bull and less terrier, and some will look as though they have more terrier & less bull. The more terrier types will, due to their terrier ancestry, have longer legs & less bulky bodies and less 'bully' heads. That doesn't make them any less staff!
The so-called Long-Legged Staff, or the Irish Staff, or the Long-Legged Irush Staff are one of two things;
1. An ignorant breeder who doesn't know the proper name for a staffordshire bull terrier,
2. A breeder who is trying to sell a cross breed (possibly with APBT, but not necessarily) or a breeder who is selling an APBT and is calling it different to get around the law.
If you have papers for your dog, it is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, whether it has long legs or not.
If you don't have papers, but both parents were staffs, then it is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
If it's a cross breed, then you probably won't know what its parentage is.
