Walking off the lead
How would I teach my 8 week old puppy to start walking off the lead to make sure they come bak to me when out for walks ? Or on. A field?
Would people suggest collar and lead or harness?

Re: Walking off the lead
I'd start off with a harness at such a young age, also get a long training lead, you can get them on Amazon and they don't cost that much, something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Training-Lead-Padded-handle-Black/dp/B00A3S2I0O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417627344&sr=8-1&keywords=long+training+lead
Once you've got the lead and harness you can work on recall. So you let your pup wander around on the long lead and keep calling him back, when he comes back give him a nice tasty treat and praise... rinse and repeat. Soon he'll know that if he comes back he'll get a treat

Re: Walking off the lead
Echo good advice from Debs.
Obviously you can't take him out before he's fully vaccinated but there is lots you can do in the house.
Start teaching him sit, stay, come etc. If he does as you wish ,lots of praise and a treat. If he doesn't, just say nothing and repeat until he does. He'll soon learn but it does take LOTS of patience.

Re: Walking off the lead
I agree with Debs. Get a really long training lead and practice that recall time and again. Make sure it's really good before you let your dog off lead and for the first few times ensure its somewhere safe and secure.

Re: Walking off the lead
On the opposite side I wouldn't put a harness on such a young pup. Start with a light weight collar and lead and wander around the garden and keep dropping the lead. Treat when you get her to come to you and treat. A long line is great when she's old enough to get out properly.
The most important thing is to teach her to walk first. If she can't walk nice on a lead you'll never teach her to walk off lead.
Don't make a big thing of it when you do long line her. Don't throw things for her, just let the line go and carry on walking and treating when you do a recall.
Pete.

Re: Walking off the lead
i would definitely get a long lead for when you get out on proper walks, when they are young they are so easily distracted by all the new things they see and can tend to forget their recall,at least with a long lead you can get them back easy

Re: Walking off the lead
Puppy classes are great if they are constructive! If you can do training while other pups are around then it will pay off later! Our puppy class was let them off lead and let them chase around...no wonder he wants to run after every dog he sees now and won't listen
Long lines are very helpful! We started with a light collar and lead and just put it on in the house and then played and had fun so Bane saw it as something good and got used to wearing it
