Biting is getting too much
Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me to stop Baxter from biting.
When we sit down in the evening after he has been for his evening walk he will jump up on the sofa and bite, when we have been out and come back home he jumps up and bites, he is six months old now and has most of his adult teeth so the bites are painful, we have a seven year old daughter who has began to spend all her time in her bedroom to get away from the biting. We have tried all the methods on here, yelping like a pup, a stern No, not giving notice until he is not jumping up or biting but nothing is working. My wife is at the end of her tether with it and has said if it cant be stopped he'll have to go. Other than the biting he is a model dog so I desperately want to get this resolved. Can anyone recommend a method other than the ones mentioned above or a trainer in the north west of England with experience with staffies, we have tried a local dog trainer but their methods were pretty much what we've already tried.
Thanks in advance

A tap on the nose.
Click your fingers and say stop at the same time and push him away, ignore him until he stops being so hyper.
Put the puppy in another room, let the puppy back in once you see that the puppy isn't has hyper if he carries on put him away in another room again (or outside).

Re: Biting is getting too much
please do not tap him on the nose,a dogs nose is so sensitive and should not even be lightly tapped.

Agree make sure he is tired after his walk also make sure the walk has free running fetch games ect not just a walk on leash.
Pick one method and stick to it don't try different things every day.
He will grow out of it.
Cheers

Re: Biting is getting too much
I had similar problems. Mine has mostly grown out of it now at 10 months. In the end I just sat down on the floor with him and let him bite me. I let him bite my thumb when he did it i would push down under his tongue and say no bite. This would actually force him to open his mouth. As soon as he stopped i would praise him and give him a treat. I did this session several times until he associated biting with the slight pain under his tongue and stopping as a good thing. This took about a week.
I then sat down with him on the floor and moved onto just saying no bite after he started nawing. hed stop and id give him a treat or his toy. I just kept running though it over and over again.
I then moved onto- as soon as he bit me id say 'no bite' very angrily and he'd lick me to say sorry. Id then treat him. I did this everyday or so for about a week again. Then generally he'd lick me instead of biting me. I can now lay down on the ground with him and trust he wont bite me
He now does it every now and then when hes really excited but it turns into licks after one naw. I just say 'licks, licks' and he quickly stops and licks me. If he ever bites hard i just bark 'no' at him, gently push him away, get up, walk away and scold him again. He gets the picture pretty quickly and it wont happen again for a while.
Sorry for the long passage but thats how I dealt with it. Id hate to see you give him away. after 6 months i came to realise my pup wasnt stubborn, he just didnt understand what i was trying to teach him. Once he picked up on he was very keen to learn and please. You just have to get though to him.

Re: Biting is getting too much
Hi all just a quick update on Baxter, after adopting a much firmer approach on the advise of a very experienced staffie owner, Baxter seems to have settled down, he has also had the snip so this may have also contributed, anyway it's all good, he still behaves like the mischievous chap he is but nothing that can't be dealt with. His behaviour when out has also massively improved with almost a 100% recall. Thanks to everyone who replied, I'm just relieved things seemed to have worked out

Well done great news. Make sure everyone is consistant though not just you, otherwise he'll end up only taking notice of you.
