Help With Biting.. Empty Help With Biting..

Post by Sarah2591 Wed Jul 03 2013, 14:42

I need advice, Gerrard is 10 weeks old and I know it's normal for them to nip playfully but he is at the point of drawing blood, he is literally taking chunks out of my hands! I have tried yelping and saying no, I just don't know what else I can do to stop him for biting, it worrys me as I have 3 young nieces and a young godson, I'm scared to have them round as he may bite them "playfully" but too hard.

Carry on with the yelp and turn away and ignore him and cease all interaction, not even eye contact. If he persists exclude him from the room for a couple of minutes.
I know it's difficult to see a light at the end of the tunnel but it will improve and you'll look back and laugh about it.

Hello Smile
I would say always have a toy close by and when he does try and nip you say no and direct his attention on to the toy, they way he will learn what is acceptable for him to chew on.
Also be consistent with the 'no' when biting they cotton on pretty fast. If your pup was still with its litter he would be learning bite inhibition through playing with his littermates and if he got too much the pup would squeel and if he continued the pup would then walk off. So you could have a go at replicating that so when it gets too much yelp give your pup a time out for a short period then re-engage with him. He will quickly learn when he bites the fun ends.
I also played a game with Otis, in which I would hide a treat in one of my hands and let him sniff it out and he wouldn't get it until he gave me kisses. So you could teach him what kisses are.
Just be firm and consistent with your pup and it will come right - I am sure many of the other members will be along shortly to give you more advise Smile

I know how you feel. The advice above is the best to follow. At 10 weeks Abby had literally taken chunks out of my hand and drawn blood on numerous occasions. Now at 12 weeks although I still get the biting when hyper it's no where near as savage as before.

He's very much still a baby, if you use the yelp & no method he'll soon learn. Keep it up Smile read the link sazzle posted that should help.

Thanks for your all your advise, I know he's only a baby and it does take a while to sink in but he is getting there.. I think it's only when he gets over excited so now when he bites too hard or draws blood we are excluding him from the room.

Hi Sarah

I'm at the same stage as you with my 10 week old. Not sure if this is recommended or not but I growl at him like his mum would when he would nip her. He stops straight away and sits beside me calmly
