Struggling Empty Struggling

Post by b_phippsy Wed Nov 05 2014, 14:44

Hey everyone looking for some reassurance, Harley is 14 weeks now and his biting is getting to much, Last night he was like a different dog we were doing some tricks with treats and he was a little exited but not to bad then i took his collar of to give him a groom and it went down hill from there really, he was running at me going for my trousers and when i was telling him no he just carried on so i tried to go towards him to pick him up to calm him down (that's what I've been doing up to this point) but he was in the corner growling and baring his teeth which really scared me so I left the room and closed to door waited about a minute and went back in calmly and he ran at me again going for my leg and showing his teeth he was so out of control. Im really worried and scared that he is going to be aggressive towards me and when my partner isn't around im on edge after last night. Im just wondering whether picking him up to calm him down has been the wrong thing to do.  I love him so much and everyone says how well trained he is with his recall and tricks etc.. but his biting at my legs is getting too much. Also trying to leave the room and close the door when hes hanging on to my jeans is proving quite difficult as he wont let go.
Any help would be much appreciated

First off, don't panic Smile He's only 14 weeks old bless him he's excited all the time and every little thing is an adventure! I remember reading a post, it may well have been on here about a lady who used to put on wellies when her pup was younger because she was an ankle biter.

Be reassured that at 14 weeks old it is definitley NOT aggression, puppies don't know how to behave and it's up to us to teach them. It is painstakingly slow and progress turns into regress time and time again but the key is to keep with it.

Rather than pick your pup up to calm him try turning your back on him, fold your arms so they are tucked out the way and wait, don't say anything, don't move. You may get him jumping at the back of your legs at first but ignore him. Eventually he will probably sit back confused, as soon as he stops jumping treat him. Rinse and repeat.

It's not easy and puppies try your patience as much as children do but it does get better. Just be consistent and don't give in Smile

There are loads of us on here who've been through puppyhood so you're in the right place for advice!

Hang in there, my girl didn't let me groom her for a few months even now she's not that happy.

Was a time i felt just like you when trying to get her to toilet outside but eventually we found out what worked for us and so will you.

I'm sure he will be fine once settled into a good routine, the folding arms and turning around is a good method to use.

Im looking at the photo in your avatar and by the look of those eyes he may be possessed Laughing

But as the others said 14 weeks most likely not aggression.
Does Harley have regular play with other puppies or dogs? it is important to get them socialised well before 18 weeks and this helps teach them their boundaries and how to play.

Cheers

he goes to puppy classes every week where he sees alot of other dogs and he has sniffed at other dogs when we been out but he tends to climb up other dogs and most don't like that so i keep him on a long training lead. He has played once freely with a dog today down the beach.

Hi try not and worry too much about the biting, its just normal puppy behaviour and it will get better, ignoring them is the best thing to do, but you could also try giving him a chew/toy to chew on when he gets excitable Smile

They all seem to go through a serial ankle biting phase! They really don't like to be ignored so once he starts biting and running at you, just walk away. Leave the room or go off and do something else and he should calm down. As Debs said treat when he stops and repeat Smile
Picking him up will only frustrate him as he tries to squirm away to continue the game or reward his negative behaviour with fuss and handling.

Thanks for all the advice above really appreciate it, as much as I would love to say that harley bitting has improved i cant as it is getting worse Sad  I've tried ignoring and turning around saying no in a deep voice and he is just not getting the message he just pulls and growls harder and bites more, I think hes trying to gain ddominance and I have exhausted all the other methods such as squealing in high pitch voice saying no and ignoring.  Its starting to get serious now and i have no idea what to do my legs are covered in bruises and earlier was the worst biting incident where he has torn my skin  on my thigh and it is very deep and wont stop bleeding i am literally at my wits end and cant stop crying. one of my friend has suggested grabbing him by the scruff and saying no and putting him in time out what do you think because he wont listen to any commands when he is in a frenzy hanging off my leg. sorry to carry on but im literally in bits over this and scared to move incase he lunges at me. I just want him to learn its so frustrating because he is good with everything else ;(

Everybody here that raised a puppy went through the same and at that age it's not agression just over excitement  and lack of knowledge how to behave. Say firm no give him something he can chew on and if it doesnt work ignore him and if its not enough naughty corner for few min.
Worked for us but took some repetition .

Hi Rachel

Yes I have tried having a treat in my pocket so when he mouths I say no and if he stops i would give him a treat. I tried to do that when hes jumping up and grabbing me and he ignores the command and bites more its like as if hes in a frenzy.
I've just put some rocks in a can to shake  as a last resort and he did let go of my partners trousers straight away and backed off so i will try this

Don't treat him when he bites you! Give him a chew toy he can bite instead.

What Peppa said.. He needs to use his teeth/jaw, get some raggy toys or soft toys and redirect his mouthing onto play with a soft toy that he can really chew into. He needs an outlet. Other times, a frozen kong will help when you can't play to keep him occupied.

A can with rocks is overkill, he's a puppy doing what puppies do. How much are you walking him and does he get to meet other dogs very often?

Hi Rachel, he is going through the teething stage at the moment so i am giving him frozen carrots frozen tea towel to chew on. trying to walk him 2-3 times a day so when he comes home he sleeps he does mix with some dogs if he is down the beach and every Thursday he goes to puppy class where he gets to meet other dogs and seems to mix quite well but does have a tendency to climb up dogs but has never growled at any. I can report me and my partner have noticed his nipping has subsided slightly by using the rocks in the can method so just trying to reinforce to NO and he now lets go when mouthing. Here's hoping it will keep work Smile thank you all for the advice and for being so supportive xx
