Still struggling.
So, following on from yesterday's severe constipation, Brutus's response and general well being has improved considerably. BUT, he hasn't passed any feces in almost 24 hours. After speaking to the vet, they think he still may have something stuck in him which is causing the last of the blockage. They have advised two options:
1: use 2-3 tablespoons of parrafin oil on his food. This should work through his system in 8-10 hours, so best done in the morning.
2: purchase an enema for an infant from the pharmacy (its what they had to use yesterday to provide instant relief) and give that to him. This will work within 10 - 20 mins and should clear the final blockage.
Has anyone done this before? Slightly worried about the enema, but as it was done yesterday to relieve the pain it should be ok.
Thoughts?

Re: Still struggling.
I'm sorry to hear that he still hasn't passed the blockage As I said I have no "doggy" experience in this and have no idea how different it is in dogs as in children, but in children it can take up to 3 weeks to clear out completely. Did you ask the vet how long it should take to clear?

Re: Still struggling.
The vet is slightly concerned that it still hasn't cleared fully, especially after what he wa sgiven yesterday. His other serious concern was that he hasn't passed anything today. He thinks that unless he gets it all out soon, it will just clog up again and he will have to operate.

Re: Still struggling.
Providing you follow the instructions from your vet concerning the enema, I think that could be your best option. Best to get rid of what ever it is as soon as possible. Good luck!

Re: Still struggling.
Check with the Vet first, instead of an enema ask if you can use a suppository, its a capsule the outside of which is soluble. You insert in dogs rectum and wait several minutes for results. less messy to use than an enema. Good Luck
Have just been looking up your previous posts and noticed that Brutus has recently had a course of anti biotics, do you think this could cause constipation? I know that anaesthetics can.

Re: Still struggling.
He went last night, but that's only once in 36 hours. As he passed something, we gave him paraffin oil instead of the enema. Still nothing this morning, and if he hasn't done anything by lunch it may be another trip to the vets to see if there is a blockage or something more sinister.

Re: Still struggling.
Have they done an xray ? Too see where the blockage is or if it's a foreign body ?
My sisters Labrador has similar issues, turned out he had swallowed a sock, luckily it was a quick operation and within a day or two bk to normal.

Re: Still struggling.
Yep, the X-ray was what gave it away. It showed he was severely clogged up.
So given he had an enema by the vet yesterday and paraffin oil last night, when would you expect him to return to normal stools? He's had a few meals now but nothing.
Tonight's meal was ox tongue, veal off cuts and liver with a pump of omega 3 oil. Thoughts?

Re: Still struggling.
Wonder wether it's worth putting him on easy digestible plain (steamed or boiled) chicken n rice...just until he's sorted out then slowly re-introduce the raw....? Might be worth asking ur vet ?

Re: Still struggling.
I was thinking along the same lines, but I was worried that rice may cause some stiffening of his stools and so have left it as meat only. He still hasn't done anything today, which is coming up to nearly 36 hours since his last movement. With the exception of last nights meal, the rest have been chicken breast and kidney.
Problem is Brutus is making it really tough to tell if he is uncomfortable or not. He is playing, running around, chasing brids in the yard and constantly wanting food, so being his normal self. But he's just not going to the toilet.
I just spoke with the vet and he has booked him in for another x-ray tomorrow morning to see what exactly is going on.

Re: Still struggling.
So do I, not only for his health, but the expense. Not that I wouldn't spend the money on him, I have and will continue too, but I'm hoping this gets sorted out soon as we almost own a section of the vet clinic.
