Bizarre feeding problem Empty Bizarre feeding problem

Post by Rubio Sun Sep 21 2014, 08:45

Rubio has been off his food for a while. He's fed raw and I got an order from a new supplier that I just presumed he wasn't keen on. As of yesterday I've discovered that he'll quite happily eat, just not out his bowl! He will eat pieces from my hand no problem, even when I have the bowl in my opposite hand and am quite obviously taking it out for him. He will eat some things out the bowl, particularly salmon which he gets a lot, but he won't touch the raw minces unless they come from my hand! Anyone experienced this slightly bizarre problem before?

Think it's quite common.. How old is he now? May be a bit of attention seeking/boundary testing. I wouldn't pander to him too much - a healthy dog won't starve themselves. If he hasn't eaten for a few days may be worth a vet check, though most vets won't agree with raw feeding and will probably blame that!

He's just coming up to 9 months. I do think he's probably being fussy, but I panic when he's not eating because he's always been such a keen eater. I'm not sure I could leave him a few days! He has started eating grass quite often at the moment as well

Hm, Bug's always eaten grass but if this is a new thing and he's off his food perhaps he's got a bit of an upset tummy? Are his motions okay when he goes?

What is his bowl made of?
We have metal ones and Bane won't eat out of it if it moves and makes a noise on the floor. We normally feed him outside on the floor, inside on a chopping board or if it is frozen I chuck it on the back door rug and he has no problems.

It's metal but it's the one he's always had, and he is happy to eat some things out it. I don't think the noise bothers him. I think he's just being a chancer!

When mine goes off his food he won't eat it unless it's off a spoon.

I came on here today to ask a question about feeding, and it's been interesting to read the replies on this thread.
Millie has been on the Wainrights trays for about 2 months now, normally she would clear her bowl every night, but for over a week she has hardly touched it and it's been getting thrown out, I felt she was being fussy she has been at vets the other day for annual booster and she said her tummy felt fine.

My son did sit 2 nights running with her spoon hand feeding her and she finished the lot, although last night it was back to leaving the lot, do I persist with Wainrights and hope its just a faze she's going through?

I'm pretty sure now that mine is just being fussy and waiting to see if he can have some of what we're having before he eats his. In saying that I don't think I'll be ordering any chicken mince from the raw supplier again because some of it has been really stinking!

They can be fussy and moody with food. Put it in the bowl and leave it a while, if it's not eaten remove the bowl. As mentioned earlier, if they are feeling well they will not starve themselves. If you start spoon feeding or hand feeding you'll be regretting the day you started that.

Obviously it's different if they are unwell but don't pander to their whims if they are fine and healthy.
