What to do with excessive itching if ACV doesn't work
Hi,
Our little Zero has really bad itching and it drives him insane. He has started to bald in places from itching so much...
We took him to the vets and wanted to give him steroids which we took a weeks worth of to see how it went (They stop him itching but have side effects later in life), now the vet has suggested getting his blood tested to see what he is allergic to.. but this is quite expensive to have done and then come the cost of his antidote which we'd have ot buy every month..
So really just wondering if anyone has something similar and has any other suggestions as to what we could do to help him.

Have you tried antihistamines? Loads of members use piriton for their itchy dogs

They did scraps on him but nothing came up.
He only really started itching bad one the weather got warmer and pollon season started.
I was told in another thread it wouldn't be a good idea to give a young dog tablets.

sounds very likely that its a pollen allergy then. Piriton are OK for dogs, half a tablet a day for a few days should be ok x

Sounds like it could be pollen! Piriton are fine for pups, the vets prescribed them to us when Bane was about 13 weeks old. They didn't work for him though so we have been through a whole lot of things.
For the allergy blood testing, you don't have to go down the route of a monthly antidote once you get your results. They are expensive but worth it when you get an answer as you know how you can tackle the problem.
Incase it is a pollen allergy, try wiping him down after every walk to make sure the pollen isn't left to irritate his skin. Stop him from running through lots of long grass or laying and rolling in grass.
Bane started to lose hair on his ears and got really itchy causing skin infections at about 13 weeks old. We eventually did a blood test and found out he is allergic to dust mites. We use a steroid spray and an anticeptic wash to clear up any scratches and skin infections. He has primrose oil and apple cider vinegar in his food. We also switched him to raw to remove any chance of a food allergy/storage mites in his food and spray the house every so often with a dust mite killer. We have his allergy under control without having to pay for the monthly antidotes It is doable! It just takes time!

Re: What to do with excessive itching if ACV doesn't work
Thanks for the replies.
We were given the steroid spray but it made no difference and he had a injection too but still the same. Just got to wait 6 weeks for the blood tests now thanks to the vet for not mentioning we can't do it if he's just had the injection...
I may go get some of the piriton and give then a try.
He doesn't get to go in long grass really anymore. Maybe one a month we take him to the field, the problem is he loves running in the park and on the bridleways near us. Much more fun than a regular walk for us too!

Have you been applying the spray daily after washing the area? We used it here and there to begin with, but it was only when we used it every day after washing with ACV or an anticeptic wash that it took effect and his infections and skin cleared up.
Waiting 6 weeks is going to be a pain! I hope you find something that settles him It isn't nice watching them scratch so badly!

How many days did it take for your dogs itching to stop?
We've been giving him half a tablet a day now since monday and it has helped calm it down but he still itches sometimes.

Itchy Stafford. Redness
We use Rock Sulpher in his water. Stops the itching reduces redness, helps to keep him cool. Can be bought anywhere online. Google it "Rock Sulpher for dogs"

Re: What to do with excessive itching if ACV doesn't work
Hi, new member here. My girl has pollen and grass allergies. Tried everything the vet had to offer and next step was to see a skin specialist. I had been recommended to out her in a fish based dry food... Anyone tried this? I have also been suggested to try sardines?? Anyone heard of this?? Ohh... I have also started washing her in oatmeal soap every second day rather than the antibacterial wash which did not improve the itchiness or rash. Here's to hoping my baby improves

Roxy Girl: If it is a grass or pollen allergy you will have to try and work around it: wipe her down when you come in from a walk, try to avoid long grass and try hay fever tablets (piriton) to ease the itching etc.
I would imagine that you have been advised to try a fish based diet, due to the extra Omega nutrients she would get from it. Fish oil is supposed to be very good for their skin
Allergies are tough, but once you find a way of working around it and dealing with it when she has flair ups it isn't so bad! Good luck!
