Hey all
Just have to have a wee rant lol.
Iv had pup since 8 weeks and is now 15 months, shes not had really any bad experiences but she acts so scared sometimes, like when i pick her harness up she runs away and the tails between the legs etc, she seems scared of things sometimes despite never having issues previously.
Its like sometimes shes more what ud expect from a rescue u dont know the background of.
Just makes me bit sad cos iv only ever tried to do the best for her

Well i usually try to pick up tips from cesar himself Smile

I disagree with the way he raised all his dogs to be very, artificial and unnatural in a way but his techniques do seem to work well Smile
(his dogs just dont look like they get to have a voice, know what i mean? they have to obey every law every time or they get punished and its a bit weird in my opinion. They are animals after all)

But, he did this one episode called "Petrified pitbull" about this insecure dog who barely wanted to leave the house Smile

I hope it will help since i cant do much myself!

apparently the key is to challenge the dog and not feel sorry for it because it encourages bad energy!  Smile
You need to be very lively and positive around your dog instead!

Hope this helps

CM tends to "flood" dogs with the negative stimulus that they fear, which can often make the problem worse, and can also cause aggression in dogs. The man in an uneducated idiot, working on the basis of pack theory and dominance, which was derived from a study observing captive wolves, which doesn't even apply to the dogs that we live with today.

Rico; puppies go through various fear stages throughout their development. Over-facing her will only make this temporary problem a permanent one. Generally, between 6 to 14 months the second fear imprint period or fear of new situations period can begin. Dog again shows fear of new situations and even familiar situations. There are many conflicting views as to whether you should reassure your dog or not in these situations. Above all, never force the fearful stimulus. Biscuit did this a few times in the first year after I rescued her. I just sat quite neutrally and called her over to me using positive, calm, quiet tones; always allow her to approach you, don't approach her when she's feeling fearful. I'd go back to basics with the harness; if you use a clicker, you can click and treats whenever she shows positive interaction with the harness, otherwise just use a positive voice to mark the interaction and give her a treat. Do this a few times per day and try to stick to a routine for a while to build confidence and ensure that she knows what's coming next in her day. It will pass if you handle it correctly!

Thanks everyone.
Its just so wierd she has these wee fears like for a while bins, more recently there was a temporary traffic light she wouldnt go past. I walk over the park and moors and for the time iv had her walked over the bridge to it, its a proper bridge in no way wobbly or anyting and she goes right down ears back and right into the left hand side to go over.

I got a couple of books that were recomended here as an extra boost to help and her classes start back start of aug.

I got the cesar books out library a while back. Yeah hes so regimented with them and its like sorta curbing their individual personality.

Milo is the same with his harness he will hide under a chair or cower near the back gate - it's so pitiful to see. I have to coax his with a doggy treat to have it put on & I'm ever so gentle. Also if you go to throw a ball overhand he will duck and cower so I think along the way someone has thrown a ball at him & caught his skin maybe in a harness clip - something like that

Lula never seem to want to go on walks and we could not understand why. Once out of the house she seem to love her walk but when she saw the harness she was of the other way. We realized the harness had been rubbing her and she was a little sore under her arm pits. It maybe worth just having a look to see if there any sore spots from the harness.
Only a few days a go Lula stop walking and refuse to move and started growling. Me and my daughter were looking for a cat or another dog but could not see any. It took us a few minutes to realize she was growling at the work sign on the pavement. Once i gave the lead a little tug and she walked round it and had a sniff she was perfectly happy to carry on her walk.
Lula can be as daft as a brush, on the same walk as the work sign she jump on a wall and walk down it till. We managed to coax her of the wall only for her to do the same thing a little further along.

Lady gets a bit weird on one bridge on our walks
be an old iron pedestrian bridge over a river .. about 70 feet length
if she's walking without having to stop .. she's fine .. walks like she's on solid ground .. but if she has to stop mid-bridge .. then she crouches down and moves very very slowly ..
the footway does bounce/wobble ever so slightly when there's other 'traffic' on it ..

and she'll bark at those triangular 'road-works' signs
and show reluctance to walk past them ..

plastic bags in trees flapping in the wind can trigger a 'grrrr-wufwuf' response as well :-)

Daisy can be quite skittish on walks too, randomly being scared of a bus stop that she's been passed hundreds of times or just on particular bin when everyone's on the street at out! I guess some dogs are just more jumpy than others?

Pixee wont walk pass a road sign, I have to cross the road, only way I can get her to walk on. Also work cones she hates. Bridges, she kind of like crawls across them, and yet others she walks on. Its good to know we not the only ones.

My pup hated his harness and lead at 10 weeks despite never having seen either before. As soon as he saw it he'd crouch almost to the ground, shivering, with his ears back, and wouldn't look at me. What I did was just fit the harness and lead gently but without saying anything and lead him out of the house, where he was fine. I also left the harness and lead on the floor so he got used to seeing them. Two days later he was running up to me to have his harness put on and he's loved it ever since.

Have you tried to do some basic training with getting the harness put on ?

Maybe try some treats and have him sit while the harness goes on, then give lots of praise when it is on him.

Agree with Rachel on the fear periods, it was very notable with Marley when he was in one. things like paper bags blowing in the wind used to freak him, he even stalked a boat mooring once and jumped back like it was about to bite him.

Fritz sometimes runs away when I pick up his harness too. I just calmly walk after him and slip it on gently and give him a treat, then he's perfectly happy. I think he's just stubborn sometimes.
