Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
Tbh honest at 7 months that's the last thing you should be thinking of, excessive excersise at this age can cause serious joint damage in later life. At 7 months you should be sticking to walks 5 mins per month of age so 35 mins 2or3 times a day with some of lead play. She will be what she will be they're are all different shapes and sizes. What are you feeding her at the moment

Why would you want your pup to get over weight?
Just give her lots of off lead play time and let her play with other dogs but they do come in different shapes and sizes so just make sure she's in good health .

Raw food is the best in my opinion but its not for everybody otherwise just let nature and time to do the work. If you dry feed add sardines ,eggs cheese etc.

Its amazing how many diff sizes and shapes they can be. My girl is quite tall but slender and shes a full staff but still filling out. She was eating raw but stopped cos shes a fussy mare lol! But on it she lost a bit of weight but u could see the muscles

At 7 months old your girl is still a pup. Only time and maturity will give her muscle and it's definitely not advisable to overfeed or overtrain her at this age.
In regards to food, raw IMO is the best for lean muscle gains but saying that, the muscle will only come on over time and from what I've learnt about this breed (and what I've witnessed with my past breeds), they will only start to fill out after 12 months so just continue to feed the recommended daily amount and exercise according to age.

I've been involved in bodybuilding for 20 years and had been sponsored by supplement company, I can tell you that the majority of supplements out there are a waste of $$$ and will not build muscle. There are some that do help with recovery but you can pretty much get the same results from eating quality protein.
Looking into the ingredients of some of these dog supplements, they are actually pretty good and better than the human equivalent as they don't contain a lot of the crap like artificial sweeteners, flavours and fillers but still have all the of essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Still a few ingredients in there that I would would avoid but still a pretty good overall supplement when you compare it to the human equivalent.
Saying this and based on the ingredients, those supplements would not have much of an effect on building muscle. The dogs used in the ads are usually American bullies that are extremely well muscled naturally basically since birth and not from using any natural supplement like these.

Ledger thrived on Pero being older he does agility and flyball and runs with me and that was more than enough to have him looking lean and athletic but the definition was only really evident from certain angles when he was stood a certain way so not unnaturally bodybuilder type
As has been said take it easy with a young dog until they are fully grown to prevent injury later in life and I also advocate feeding raw which is obviously a high protein diet without all the fillers they get in kibble that they don't process anyway

Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
Nothing wrong with people getting there dogs in shape.
But there health is number 1 prioty for me.
If my dog is healthy then am happy.
Why would you wanna bulk a puppy up any way.
They need more nutrients at that age.

Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
Thanks dj,
I just meant the ad portrays that u should want yours to look like that and i think it could be abused by people. By all means if your dog was to look like that naturally then as long as its healthy great!
Supplements can be great for a whole host of things, im really into natural supplements and mine gets some of the cjs herbs etc added to her food as shes quite delicate skin and tummy wise.
Its good to know that they are good quality tho as i know that some of the people ones arent good.......nothin a nice big steak wouldnt help with.

I know what you meant by your post but it also made me think how it's sort of false advertising by these people selling a "muscle building" supplement by using a more naturally muscular breed of dog or an "enhanced" dog to advertise a product that is nothing more than a great multivitamin. If I were to take a multivitamin, I'd actually use this one myself over what they sell for human consumption
I'm all for natural supplements too if needed - Marquez is on NOW Foods Thyroid Support (herbs) at the moment which is what I also take for my hypothyroidism and will start him on a homeopathic thyroid support concoction in a few weeks when it arrives. I'm also building up a small medicine cabinet of different homeopathic remedies for different occasions just in case he needs it
As you've mentioned your girl has a delicate stomach, have you tried L-Glutamine? That will do wonders with healing her gut. This is one supplement that I've used consistently over 20 years and have used on our dogs whenever they've needed it with great success. Either pop into a sport supplement store or order online one that is pharma grade without any flavours/colours or stuff in there and add it to her water. It is flavourless and mixes extremely well so she won't even know that its in her water.

Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
walking and good food should be enough till she 18/24 months then you can think about other things
Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
Nice one steve for feedback.Regarding walking how often and how long per walk plus how much food as she always wants to eat.

Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
With regards to feeding each brand will be different Pretty much the cheaper the food the more you feed I always stayed to the lower side of recommendations to allow for training treats in the day. Now on raw Ledger at 20kg is having about 450g of food a day (looks tiny split between 2 portions compared to the kibble he had)
She is still a pup and will be growing for a good year or two yet I got Ledger from rescue and was told he was about 2yrs and he for sure got broader over the next year I think pretty much if you can just see the definition of the last rib before the waist she is ok any more than that and id up the food a bit

staffy are meduim size dogs so you need to follow the back
for the first year is the 5 mins rule every mouth you add 5 mins to the walk 2/3 time per day
Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
So basically steve 2-3 30 min walks a day is enough then?

Based on her weight that's looking ok maybe look at dropping to two meals now and closer to the 200g for each and see how she does, can always reduce it again

Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
We found that switching to raw food made Bane leaner and much more healthy looking (he was very scrawny and skinny before) and he just has two 45 minute walks per day.
We will be looking into fly ball, agility, bike joring, weight pull and all those for when he is older, but it isn't recommended until atleast 18 months of age.
There's no need to rush her growth, they fill out naturally between 2-3.

Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
working dog food and keep em active nature will take it course. but like others have said 18 months is about the minimum for hard excersise or you will just damage the dog. also keep it varied and fun, sprints, pulls, and jumps will get you a happy fit dog and if you do it right you can train in some great obediance if you factor in some mental excersise as well. you wont see the full size dog until around three years anyway so just enjoy your pup it will fly by. i also use vetzyme B+E with zinc and selenium as they are starting to retrain for the bikjoring season and it gives some nice lean muscle for endurance.

Re: Good bulking foods for Muscle?
there are loads to choose from and i chop and change around abit. the one that i have seen the best results with and use the most is Purina beta active dog. just remember that as well as a higher protien content it has a much higher fat level as well. it works for me as my two love it, it bulks them quick and they build good muscle for pulling.
they have a normal diet of jwb when not active or they would just turn into fat furballs.
my best advice is to get a cheap set of kitchen scales and weigh out each meal. this will allow you to keep a consistant ratio of food over workouts. it will take you a few months to come to a happy medium where you know whats working best. also note each dog is different so use the guidlines on the packet as a very rough guide. my girl is on 100 grams a day more than my boy and she is still leaner than him despite the same excercise regime.
