Help with my 13 week little lady
Hi, am new to this forum, and need some advise on my 13 week old little lady . She's been with us now for six weeks, she's my first pup, and I'm defo like a new mum, learning everyday . She's settled in very well, all jabbed and ready and willing to meet new friends. The vet advised us to mix her with as many dogs as possible, and so far so good, however, she's great with older dogs, but not so good with other pups.
My sister has two boxers, one aged 4 the other 11 months. They are brilliant with our pup (summer) is her name, they tolerate her hanging off their jowls, ears ect, and run around to play, it's great to watch them together, and summer realises if she's overstepped the mark, and they warn her off. The problem is , my friend has a 14 week show spaniel, who's very docile, and when we visit for play, our summer just goes too far. It starts as play, but then she is trying to be very dominant, standing over the other pup, holding him down,it's even got to the snarling growling stage, which is not good, as I then step in to separate them, to me it's gone beyond play, and summer gets too rough.
So my question is, do I keep her away from other pups, or let them just get on with it. My partner says it's in her nature to be such a lively excitable pup, but when does this play turn into some thing more? Obviously, with the stigma attached to our staff breed, I don't want to keep her away, I want to encourage her to mix and play nice with other dogs. We have a thirteen year old daughter, whom summer loves, and she's just very excited when she meets other children ect, just the typical biting hair ect, which I know she'll grow out of in time, so I'm not worried around her socialising with children ect, it's just this aggresive pup thing.
Any advice would be great, or do you think I'm a first time worrying mum .
Cheers Karen

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
By all means let her play with as many other dogs as she possibly can, if it looks like it is getting too much for the other dog then step in and separate them.

Re: Help with my 13 week little lady
Hiya from me and Vinnie, as Kathy says just let them play but step in if things get too rough. I doubt its a dominance thing at such an early age and they do play rough.

Re: Help with my 13 week little lady
Hi from me & Katy, keep her socialising with other dogs they need it. Staffies do play rough and are very vocal, just watch if she gets too rough not all dogs are as tough as our babies

Re: Help with my 13 week little lady
Hi ya i echo what is said above she will have more respect at this age for the older dogs, but she will test other pups because thats what they do at that age, they test each other, let them play and as said above step in if you think it gets to rough, sit them down calm them and then let them play again and just keep doing that

Re: Help with my 13 week little lady
Hi Karen
If you haven't already, get her enrolled into puppy classes asap.
This will teach her manners and control in a supervised environment.
Toots benefitted hugely from her classes.

Re: Help with my 13 week little lady
thank you all for your tips , just an update, summer has been fab with most dogs, shes now coming up to 5 months, and the change in her is unreal x shes such a cheeky, loveable girl, who is well and truly spoilt xx we havnt enrolled her in puppy classes yet, but has learnt the basic commands, and she walks twice a day , in the mornings runs freely playing with at least seven dogs x they keep her in check , and shes now learning whos ears she can get away with chewing lol .

Re: Help with my 13 week little lady
let her play, but step in when it gets too ruff! I give mine a scruff on the back of the neck or pull her away and hold her down, like the mother would do, make them submissive, to calm them down. seems to work over time.
they just get very excited.
they just get very excited.
