Keeping a pup Empty Keeping a pup

Post by Matt86 Sat May 10 2014, 16:27

Hi all.

My pooch, Carly, had a litter of 6 pups about 8 weeks ago. There were 7 but one was stillborn. Tried for half hour to get it to breathe and even gave it mouth to mouth but no luck Sad Anyway, I would like to keep one of the males and am wondering if this would work OK? Do males and females get on better together? Obviously I will be getting both of them spayed/neutered as there's no chance I'm dealing with mountains of dump multiple times a day again from 6 digestive systems with legs haha

Any advice would be appreciated Smile

Hello. If you were to keep one I'd probably keep a boy, just to be on the safer side! Many bitches live together happily, I just prefer male/female matches. I'd get Carly spayed ASAP if you do decide to keep as it's best to wait til 18 months/2 years to get your pup fixed for full growth/development potential.

However, if you're concerned about cleaning up mess, remember that you're going to be cleaning up a lot of it if you keep a pup! Do you also have the time/energy/finances for two dogs? It's literally double the work, especially with a pup that needs full training.

Yep, no problem raising a pup. I had Carly from a pup too Smile Just wouldn't like to be cleaning up after 6 again. They all like to go at once in various places haha Definitely got the funds for 2 dogs. Carly is on a full vet plan that includes micro chipping, injections, monthly worm/flea treatments, nail clipping etc etc and we will be putting the new pup on the same plan. My wife is always at home while I'm at work so both dogs will get proper exercise and care.

I've only ever looked after litters in rescue kennels but yes they are a lot of work! Do all of the pups have homes lined up?

As long as you think that Carly would enjoy having a little play mate around and you'd like another then I can't see a problem! My step mum keeps whippets, but she kept the son of her bitch before she was spayed and they're just like any other pup/older dog! No real special connection or anything but get on well! Suppose it's just assessing the pups personalities and seeing which would fit you and Carly best Smile

Nooooo don't do Tyson! I used to work in rescue kennels and the amount of Tyson's out their owned by absolute miscreants is unreal! I always groan when I meet a tyson lol people usually call them that to make them look well 'ard! I've met a few lovely Dexters so that name always makes me go Love Struck I love old man names for staffies! All of out strays ended up being called Bob, Brian, Arthur, Billy etc etc lol! I love the name Ace! My last foster was going to be Darwin if he stayed but it didn't work out Sad
