Rabies serum antibody titer test fail
Anyone else's dog have this problem? Marquez got his rabies vaccine at the beginning of february and had his blood taken a month later to have his antibody levels checked which he needs for his travel to europe later this year and he only had a level of 0.16 IU/ml when the minimum is 0.5 IU/ml. This means he now has to be revaccinated again this week with rabies vaccine which is a big concern to us after he had a terrible reaction to a vaccine (kennel cough) last month. I know they are different vaccines and he seemed fine after his initial rabies shot but we're still really worried. I asked my friend back in Aus her thoughts and if she had seen anything like this and she replied only when an asshole clinic owner diluted rabies vaccine to be able to vacc 10 dogs.... but I don't think this applies to our vet. She told me to check before they vaccinate again and make sure the metallic seal is intact. Will be easy to see this time as the vet is coming over to our home to do this for us so I can check the vial. She said if he fails this next one, he could have immune issue where his body is rejecting the vaccine
We were initially told it would take a couple of months for the result but it took only a few weeks so hopefully it doesn't take much longer than that next time so that we can still bring him with us for the summer.

I know but not surprised that some greedy vets would do that too but I really don't think that this was the case here. My friend just said that he might just be a case where he just needs that extra dose so not to worry just yet until after he gets his blood taken again and tested.
I'll be keeping an extra close eye on him after his shot on Wednesday.

Re: Rabies serum antibody titer test fail
Well it doesn't look like Marquez will get his vaccination today... still have to discuss it with the vet if we have to wait a week or two. He had another seizure last night, we think during the night as his bed has dried drool on it and again at 6.30am. The vet asked to bring him in this morning to discuss what to do but like last time, she said that they suspect he has mild epilepsy. The first time it happened was almost 1 month ago and it has happened hours after we've come back from being away. This time only the hubby was away for a few days and arrived back at midday. The vet said last time that maybe the excitement of seeing us come back was a trigger for the seizures. Worried now if this is the cause as Angel and I will be headed to Perth for almost a week while the hubby stays at home with Marquez. I suppose we'll find out if us going away and coming back is a cause if happens again next friday/saturday

Thanks Hayley. He just had another about 10 minutes ago which was a bit better than the earlier one. Off to the vet soon so they can check him.

Re: Rabies serum antibody titer test fail
Just got back front he vet and they said that everything seems normal. They advised against giving the rabies vaccine just yet and to wait until I get back from Australia next friday to see if the excitement of us going away then coming back is the trigger for the seizures which they really believe since the first time it happened was when we came back from a trip away and yesterdays started after the hubby came back from business overseas. Seeing if they happen again when we come back will give us further proof that it is the excitement triggering it.
They gave me injectable valium to put up his bum when he has a seizure and I didn't expect to have to try that out so soon when he had another seizure in the car on the way home exactly 2 hours after his 9am seizure. The valium do lessen the severity of the seizure and he recovered much faster. Advised the vet and they said all I can really do now is keep an eye on him and hope that the seizures stop soon.

Thanks Bane. We were waiting to see how he would react to us coming home last night and so far he hasn't had any seizures so if he remains seizure free over the weekend I'll take him in on monday to get the rabies vaccine. I brought a Vaccine Detox homeopathy preperation to give him to help protect any negative sides.

Thanks Lynn. So far so good - no more seizures since the bad lot a few weeks ago and nothing since his rabies shot on monday. I did start him on a homeopathic Vaccine Detox on sunday will continue it for the next 6 weeks as recommended

Re: Rabies serum antibody titer test fail
So after failing that first test, getting revaccinated with the Rabies vaccine, waiting 1 month to get blood drawn and then another month to get the results back from the UK - Marquez has PASSED and is now able to travel to Europe with us Our summer plans and flight arrangements have been on hold as we were waiting for these results.
We didn't even want to consider the possibility that he would fail them again as it would mean that he would not be able to make the move with us but it still didn't stop us all from worrying that it would happen. It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders knowing that he is all good to fly out. Just waiting back for an email to see when he's allowed to fly out so that we can book our tickets back to Europe
