The potentially fatal disease was confirmed in a patient from London who had been bitten by a dog in South Asia.
Thanks

There is already a rabies like illness in our UK bats.

Yes, but it's only been found in 9 bats, and all of those are Daubentons bats - they don't roost in houses & have little or no contact with humans. Although the disease is nasty, if treated early it's completely curable.

Believe it or not, this isn't all that rare as such - anyone who gets bitten by a dog in a country without rabies control should get treatment before any symptoms show. The best thing, of course, is never touch dogs in Asia.

Pretty rare I believe. All dogs are required to be vaccinated by law and only wild animals may have it. I never see it reported though, but probably happens in some places where critters are everywhere, but if people here are bitten by a stray or wild animal they receive rabies treatments as a preventative so it doesn't really show up.
