Raw Diet Help !
Hi everyone, sorry for the post here I know there is an article on this but I can't find it. Koda is now 5 months and has been fed top quality dry kibble mixed with tuna, morning & night. He has gradually gone off this over the past 2 weeks and I think maybe it's time to swap him to some 'home cooked' meals instead. I wondered if he's too young, & also what can I feed him ? He's the 1st dog I've owned so I am very new to this. My OH has a lot of experience cooking for his rottweiler he had but that was years ago, so we're starting out again and also wondered if there's anything in particular that the Staffy's should be getting. Thanks

Re: Raw Diet Help !
Did you want to feed him raw meat or actually cook meals for him say like stew and veg?

Re: Raw Diet Help !
Ah that's the thing, I'm not 100% sure ! The plan was to always cook for him (ie mince with rice & veg) but when we got him as a pup the breeder was feeding him raw chicken mince & said that was the way to go, then the pet shop said get him onto top quality dry which we did & have stuck with, then I was reading about 'raw' not long ago, so I'm really not sure what's the best or where to start !

Re: Raw Diet Help !
Everyone seems to know best when it comes to feeding YOUR pup! It's completely down to you in the end and just go with what Koda does best on and what fits in with your lifestyle Some dogs don't get on with raw, others do, some are completely fine on dry once you find a decent brand.
I don't have any experience with home cooking for dogs, but I guess it follows the same principles of raw that you need to feed a good variety of things to make sure he gets all his nutrients, and it will need to be mostly made up of meat. I would assume the only difference is that you cook the food, instead of giving it raw So a little more time consuming, but then if you are cooking for yourself, chucking an extra bit in for Koda or putting a separate pan of food on for him won't be too much extra work!
As for raw, we found it really easy to get into. It's much simpler than it looks and is good fun but understandably not for everyone

Re: Raw Diet Help !
Hi Bec, rice has no value for dogs, more of a filler, my vet said not to give Jed cooked mince, i give Jed optimum biscuits (was on royal canine) and raw or sardines or tuna, he gets chicken necks, brisket bones, chicken frames, lamb flap, diced meat and the occasional mince, when he gets older i will introduce hearts and some liver. I still dont leave him when he is eating bones just in case. Its up to you and what Koda will like, there is a lot of helpful information in here on feeding raw
