Flea prevention
I was wondering what you are using to prevent fleas. Mia has had frontline in the past but my vet says it's not as good as people think.
Opinions please

Re: Flea prevention
Originally I used advocate but I don't particularly like putting unnecessary chemicals on her, so I don't flea unless she has them, bearing in mind she's never had them

Re: Flea prevention
We have to use Effipro every 3 months or so, there are some very irresponsible dogs owners very close to where I have to live and they are not very good with dog health care or their own tbh.

Re: Flea prevention
Frontline is pointless hun! I never used anything before, then Biscuit got a nasty bout of sarcoptic mange.. So I started to use advocate. Where we live now there are hardly any other dogs so she doesn't have anything again now, never had fleas here either

Re: Flea prevention
We have an all in one worm and flea treatment which came with the puppy package at our vets...I think it is Program Plus?
Once we run out though I don't think we will bother. His hair is so short that you can easily see if he has fleas and as Hayley said, don't wana put unnecessary chemicals on the pup

I have used frontline in the past but now I prefer not to use a chemical flea treatment (unless she was to get fleas)

Re: Flea prevention
Mia had never had fleas until we moved into our new place. They had cats and we have seen the odd one or two on her. Think I will avoid the frontline and try the advocate, also treating all carpets and soft furnishings

Re: Flea prevention
i frontline my dogs every 2 months from what i understand it coats the outer skin of the dog so any fles bite kills the flea so i dont think much chemical gets into the dog! my cat caught fleas once and they take over your house quickly . im all for regular worming and de-fleaing dogs and so is my vet!

Re: Flea prevention
Oh watching this thread with interest.
I use Advocate but not really sure why other than that's what was recommended. Flo has never had fleas and really doesn't come in close contact with other dogs.
The other issue is that it stains my flippin sofa... And I love my sofa !!
Gets me thinking

Re: Flea prevention
We've had to use Frontline Plus here in Jakarta although its for ticks rather than fleas and it has worked when we've used it. Can't recall any of our dogs being bothered by them in Thailand, Spain or here but ticks are another nasty story. Wish I didn't have to use anything but after losing 2 dogs to tick blood parasites in SE asia we do have to be careful. I will say that he's missed his last dose of Frontline after the seizures the other week he had and I think I may not give it to him unless we see any rat visitors in the back which were the cause and carriers of our troubles last time.

Re: Flea prevention
I know ticks are a real issue in the USA especially In the NE with Lymes disease.
Does make me wonder weather here in the UK we are guided by our vets a little too much regarding this !

Re: Flea prevention
its not just other dogs they can pick fleas up from either just being out and about they can pick them up! i buy my frontline online as its cheaper than vets also my dogs dont seem to have any adverse effects from the treatment either or i may have to think again on what to use!

Re: Flea prevention
I use advocate for both of mine as it's combined with other mite and larvae killer - we have a lot of slugs in the garden and I don't want to risk it. They get it once a month and we have never had any trouble with it. Would prefer not to use any chemicals but there are so many things the little darlings pick up from the floor you just don't know what they are scoffing!!

Re: Flea prevention
I too use frontline combo, kills fleas, ticks and biting lice. Although I have missed the last two doses, but I have put one on her yesterday, as we do lots of wood walking.

Re: Flea prevention
lots of dog owners i know only use it in the spring and summer months anyway! i might start using advocate as i am hearing things about lungworm in dogs and frontline doesnt prevent this and yes they do like to put things in their mouths when they get a chance!

Re: Flea prevention
We use a flea comb to control fleas very effective and no chemicals, waiting for flea season to try out new electric flea comb.
