Staffy barks
A strange question but do staffys have deep or high pitched barks? Marquez rarely barks and only in the morning if we don't get don't early enough to let him out to do his business but we are quite surprised that he's got a high pitched bark. To hear him you would expect it to be coming from a little lapdog. Are they like male teenagers who have to go through puberty before their voice drops?

Re: Staffy barks
Biscuits got a really deep, heavy bark but we think she's mastiff cross. Max also sounds like a lapdog lol !! He's nearly 2 so don't think that will be changing any time soon!! I've worked with lots of staffs with high pitched barks.. We called it the staffy squeal!

Staffy squeal We're all finding it funny to hear this high pitched bark come out of a dog that looks like him.... reminds us of a bodybuilder with a high pitched girly voice

Re: Staffy barks
Depends on what banes is barking for, if he wants something it's high pitched, if he's barking at my OH or just barking it's deep. Banes as only just found his voice though and even now it's rare lol

Re: Staffy barks
Mia has different barks. If she is playing its high pitched but if she hears the gate go or someone knocks at the door it is a deep bark, she also growls in various ways too, like she is talking to you, it's quite comical really

Re: Staffy barks
Ledger is generally quiet when he is pestering for attention or excited he is very high pitched short sharp yelps
Fear barking at fireworks etc is a more medium tone
Then when it's deliveries/people at the door it's a low woof

Re: Staffy barks
Douglas has a very deep throaty bark when he can be bothered (which is rarely). But it's not as low as his growl which is almost off the scale - more felt (ie vibration) than heard. It's a wrrrroooof, which seems to start slowly from somewhere beneath the sea. I have no idea if these are normal staff noises, but then i think his pedigree is to be questioned.

Re: Staffy barks
I have a gobby one to, Katy will bark at anyone who dares drive down the lane (quite deep) then if Vince the posty comes round it's higher pitched. We also have the gruff play bark & my favourite is the just woken up yawning bark which makes me laugh til I cry it sounds so funnydebs0109 wrote:I must have a gobby one then, lucky me lol

Re: Staffy barks
Rolo has 2 distinct barks... High pitched yappy shrill that pierces your ear drum for when he is really excited and Very low Deep grumble gruff bark for when he is nervous or anxious... both are usually followed by a whole range of weird sounds and vocal movements... Including the compulsory run and hide behind Mum maneuver if someone knocks on the door and the deep bark did not scare them away

Koda's only 4 months and has a relatively deep bark, but if he's playing and starts to bark with excitement sometimes he sounds like a 13 yr old boy ! lol

'Lady' only barks when at home ..
and it's quite rare ..
except if .. i point a camera at her .. use the hoover ..
wash the car with the pressure washer .. pick up a black plastic jerry-can
.. .. or she sees a neighbour who she wants to say 'hello' to ..
her bark is .. mmmmmm .. normal for her size .. ( she's only 28 lb in weight )
she does have a deep 'n slightly higher pitch versions ..
former for a warning maybe .. the latter for play and friendly greetings ..
funniest is when she barks in her sleep ..
sounds like she's barking underwater ..
sort of goes "whup-whup"
bit like those naval destroyer horn sounds that can be heard in WW2 movies

Re: Staffy barks
Thanks for all those great replies. So from I gather, he is quite normal and he may eventually develop a deeper voice OR not :p
We've only ever owned large breeds so their barks have always been extremely deep and loud most of the time but they would sometimes do a high pitched whining bark if they wanted something. It will be very interesting to see if it does change

Re: Staffy barks
my dogs used a variety of voices, from excited high pitched barks, to a very low 'macho' bark when on warning duties, or when other dogs were in the vicinity. tbh, i think all dogs have a wide variety of voices, theres a good documentary on youtube about this where dog psychologists have studied canine behaviour for years. its very intersting for people who want to know doggie language. it also discusses non verbal communication, and how unique dogs are in reading and understanding human behaviour. it showed that dogs are the empathetic animals yet known, and are far more communicative than chimps or dolphins, and are the only animal to sustain and even seek direct eye contact. a particularly interesting point ive learnt from another video is about calming behaviours that dogs exhibit and seek from one another, and humans..These include slow eye blinking, lip licking, yawning etc..if your dog is excited and you display this behaviour it calms the dog down. the dog will also do this to you if it wants you to back off out of its face.

We've owned many dogs over many years and very used to different barks/different pitches for different times but with our first stafford, he also has different barks for when he wants to go out, come in, play or he sees a stranger from the balcony but they all been a higher pitched type and not the deep ones that we're used to, especially when its one to warn off or see a stranger type. It's just strange hearing his different barks all in the same pitch regardless of the situation - just really reminds me of a smaller breeds that don't have that deep rumbling voice that we've been used to for over 25 years

Re: Staffy barks
Aw maybe he will grow into it Bane started off very squeaky! Even now when we ask him to "speak" he makes a few weird rumbling squeaky noises it's hilarious!
But then when he hears a noise at the door/outside it's a very deep grumble and bark! He just started doing it one day took us by surprise as he was always squeaky before that
