Jumping up, chasing tail
Just two things we would like to sort with our male staffy, he jumps up alot at people when they come to the house. Its not aggressive hes just so excited to see people. Is there any techniques you know of to help stop this?
Also when i walk him round to my mum and dads house to visit them hes a really exciteable dog at there house (not anywhere else i take him) and he wil just chase and chase his tail and sometimes bark i get him to stop and sit with me but sometimes hes off again. They have two cats so i wonder if he can smell them and its them that set him off?
Thanks

No worries, lots of users don't see it either. There's a ton of great information there and I usually reference it for people unless they are having an usual problem or circumstances. Sorry I've never dealt with tail chasing before. Suki was a jumper though and when we made sure everyone ignored her when she did it she stopped. It did take some time and patience though.

Re: Jumping up, chasing tail
Bane is terrible at jumping up at people! We rarely have people come round so it's hard to stop him as he doesn't really do it to us...when our neighbor comes round though he totally ignores him and if Bane jumps up, he crosses his arms and turns away from him. So far this has worked the best and he stops immediately! Just a shame you can't ask every stranger you walk past to do it

Sometimes its embarrassing bane lol. I dont think it helps that i work away from home so when i come back i let him make such a fuss of me so he thinks he can do it with everyone that walks through the door

Re: Jumping up, chasing tail
Yes the jumping needs to be ignored and the tail chasing may not be excitement, just distract him with a toy as it can become a habit. Chasing tails is sometimes a stress thing.

Yes you need to break the habit of tail chasing, stop him as son as he starts

Jackjames: Tell me about it! I always tell him down but most people don't seem to mind because he is a puppy and "it's cute" but wait until he gets older!
Haha when my OH gets in from work he does the same, but will normally ignore him until he gets to the dining room and puts all his stuff down then they go nuts!
Bane has recently started chasing shadows...
