eatin his poop Empty eatin his poop

Post by stephblaze Sat Feb 15 2014, 19:52

We have a 11 week old baby boy staffy. we have had him for 3 weeks now. Over the past few days he has been eating his own poo. He hasn't done this before. He gets fed 3 times a day and their is always access to biscuits for him. He is fed on puppy meat and tuna, salmon ect. So I know he cant be hungry. The times he has done this either me or his daddy havent been around. Is it because he is trying his luck or fretting???. He is a happy playful boy with his full vet cheack and first vaccine I have been advised not to let him in the garden as next door have a pit bull dog who constantly growls and barks and may scare him.he has training pads upstairs and downstairs and uses them often(not all the time) but we never shout or hurt him when he has an accident he gets all the possible praise we can give when he uses mat ( praise, treat, hugs) he loves a hug.

Please help as I dont want him to be ill or carry on doing this as I have children whos faces he licks.

I believe they do it for two reasons. 1- attention. 2- potassium deficiency. Try feeding him pieces of banana next to his poop so he learns to leave it & seek food instead. Good luck!

What type/brand of food is he fed on? This is quite common in dogs fed on foods with strong flavourings/additives, as is still smells as "appealing" at the other end  sick I've also seen dogs eat their own mess if they've been repeatedly scolded when messing, as they want to destroy the evidence essentially. Of course, not referring to you, just some other reasons why it can happen Smile

There's your problem lovely, bakers is the worst of the worst food you could ever feed a dog. And pedigree isn't much better! So many additives, it's like us eating mcdonalds for every meal!

Unfortunately a lot of vets know very little about nutrition! You can buy Jameswellbeloved from pets at home  Smile

This is also a great site for comparing foods

I would simply just change his food for a much better quality. Have you considered raw feeding?  Smile

I had the same problem with Zeus. He used to eat his poo as soon as it came out of the other end!

As already stated, alot of is down to the food because its full of all sorts, when it comes out of the other side, it still resembles and smells like food to them because they can't digest half of the additives/colourings/un necessary ingredients in there.

In the end, I got Zeus to stop this by pretty much telling him off anytime he went near it. He soon got the hang of it, I also changed his diet which I'm sure played a part in it at the time.
