Blood in poo
Hey all.
I have a 10 month old Staffy X Jack Russel. We rescued him 2.5 weeks ago, the past week he has had bright red blood in his poo. He seems fine within himself only the blood is rather worrying, also his stools are more "pudding" like.
I took him the vet as soon as I seen the blood and she gave him a health check and said he's in good health and it maybe the "new change" of home that is causing the blood and soft stools. She gave him an anti-inflamatory injection and said he should be fine soon and also a wormer - just incase the previous owner didn't give a decent one.
I have recently changed his food, he was originally on Bakers Complete dry dog food (puppy) - Although I am aware this is a dreadful food, I kept him on it as his previous owner fed him this and I didn't want to disrupt his stomach so soon after the re-homing.
We are now giving him Royal Canin dry food - Weve been advised its the best for sensitive tums. Hes been on this for 3 days and still has the blood in his poo BUT his stools are a little less runny - (Mr. Whippy-ish )
I am now really worried! Has anyone else had this problem?
If it doesnt clear up in the next few days I think its a trip back to the vets.

Re: Blood in poo
red blood meaning fresh, is better then black old blood which means a problem higher up in their system. It can sometimes mean a tear in the large intestine or a sign of colitis if it continues then i would go back to the vet IMO

Re: Blood in poo
I agree with Ella. A dog's poo should not look like a Mr Whippy and should not contain any blood.
There is obviously something bothering him in his lower intestinal tract/rectum/anus which needs further investigation. Please don't panic as it may just be colitis (inflammation of the colon) which is easily treated.
Just a thought, have you given him any cooked bones?

Re: Blood in poo
I'm surprised they didn't ask for a sample.. I'd test for any nasty bugs first, they're easily picked up and easily treated, my friends Yorkie had similar sounding motions last month and it was campylobacter, course of antibiotics and he was right as rain! As Ella and Lynda have said, don't panic as long as it's bright red not black/red! Maybe get him on some easy food like boiled chicken and rice or a few days to calm his stomach down?

Re: Blood in poo
I agree with Ella as well. As long as the blood is a bright red it's not as big of a concern. It could also be form a strain with the upset stomach due to the food change. If it continues I would go back to the vet though
