Rescue dogs - insurance policies?
Just wondering - if you adopt a rescue dog and add them to your Petplan policy - how does that work?! You don't know about previous visits to the vet's, etc, etc. Do you just get charged a massive yearly premium? If so it must put people off a little bit.......... When we retire, we want to adopt 2 older dogs but were just wondering.

I don't use pet plan, the boys are insured through pets at home but i insured chance through them for when he came home, and his insurance is cheaper then harvey's and i never got asked about previous conditions doesn't matter that they are a rescue dog

Biscuit had been in rescue for 18 months when I adopted her (though a year of that she had fostered with me) and that was all of the background that we had on her. She had the same premium with pet plan as any other dog would

Re: Rescue dogs - insurance policies?
When we adopted Rocky from a rescue centre we had a months free insurance from Pet Plan which we then carried on with for a year after. We received a renew notice from Pet Plan when the time came and they had increased the premiums by quite a margin (sorry I cannot remember now by how much). We then looked at insurance on line and found a cheaper quote from somewhere else which we decided to go with.
I think we were asked about any previous claims we had made, we hadn't

Re: Rescue dogs - insurance policies?
Thanks everyone. When Chloe was very tiny (about 10 weeks) she rolled in a plant in the garden (bright orange swan-like flowers) and within minutes couldn't breathe, we took her to the vets and they said it was a respiratory reaction - plant dug up and binned. When I took out a Petplan policy for both the girls I had to state previous vet visits so I told them about this. Our policy now says that Chloe isn't covered for any respiratory complaints. Bit harsh I think.

Oh I hope this doesn't cause any isues for her later in life, yes it does sound a bit harsh.

You can only say you have no past info, so nothing as far as you know.
Alfie has a reoccurring ear problem so said his ears and his skin is not covered! Apparently the two are linked together.

Re: Rescue dogs - insurance policies?
I was told by our vet that with Pet Plan they don't cover existing problems for two years, and then depending on what it was can be covered again after that two year break? Maybe I misheard...
Insurance policies are such a load of bull...there are so many terms and fine prints of what's included and what's not. We have just claimed for Bane and are looking forward to our premiums going up! Yay

Re: Rescue dogs - insurance policies?
Geting them insured is no problem, getting them to pay out when needed to is. Direct line refused to pay out for a crutiate ligament op on my ex's boy because they didnt have enough vets history so she had to foot the £1K + bill herself. she had only had him 10 months.
On the other hand 8 months later John lewis paid out in full for his crutiate op on his other leg.
I think its a bit off a fingers crossed thing that nothing happens in the first 12 months.
