Rescue dogs Empty Rescue dogs

Post by cesca1 Tue Dec 04 2012, 23:12

Just felt I had to express my annoyance at new parents who get rid of their dog because they can't cope.

My partner and I are thinking about starting a family and I would NEVER dream of loosing part of my current family.

I think people these days see their dogs as throw away objects... ie you can always get a new one to replace the old version....

Sadly I get in the habbit of sometimes looking at all the resce dogs available, which I shouldn't do as I want to take every one I see.

Why are people so mean to dogs that so many, esp staffs, end up in rescues if they're lucky?? It makes me so sad and angry.

I don't cry when people get killed in films, my oh half says I have a heart of stone hehe, but when it comes to an animal in distress I blub like a baby!! The film Marley & me got me crying my eyes out!

If people can't respect animals I wouldn't be able to respect them.

Moan over...

I agree. It's very sad. My new phase to them is "if you can't cope with a dog then you can't cope with a child so get rid of that too, you can make another one later"

When my mum fell pregnant with me they had a two year old lab, my mum's parents and her sisters all told her that she now had to get rid of Sue as she wouldn't take kindly to a baby in the house and could get jealous and in turn become vicious towards me. My mum told them to "sod off" and wouldn't dream of getting rid of their dog, in turn Sue became my best friend (after ignoring both me and mum for two weeks when I was born Smile) and never left my side. She helped me learn to walk, I use to hold onto her and she would slowly walk with me Smile She would follow me round the house and apparently I had a habit of hiding when I was a toddler and all my dad had to say was "find Emma" and she would lead them to me, she always ratted me out Laughing So I'm with you Cesca you shouldn't get rid of pets just because of a new edition you just need to adjust to the situation and anyone, unless there is a genuinlly good reason for rehoming the dog, shouldn't be so quick to do this, in my opinion. Sue was an awesome dog with both me and my brother and it broke all our hearts when she died at 16 yrs old.

Dogs are part of our family, Rocky is my little boy and I couldn't imagine my life without him now. He is currently cuddled up to my hubby on the bed as hubby isn't feeling that well, bless him. We call him Dr Rocky Lurve because he makes us feel so much better when we are down.

We feel exactly the same way we look at our local rescue centre wishing we had more room and more time. Some people can be very cruel as you say and I can't see how they can be like that. After all animals have feelings too. Our dog is a rescue dog she is gorgeous and were so glad we got her. Smile

It's so sad, Ive got a lot of rescue groups on my fb and its shocking how many dogs need homes. It benefits the girls sometimes if I see something sad they get an extra long walk and extra treats Big Grin

WHen i fell pregnant with my daughter (who is now 16) we owned a staff age 4 (a rescue) a collie x age 3 (a rescue)and a toy poodle age 12 (a private rescue) the midwife told me that the staff was going to atack my daughter, im so glad i never listened to her as they were the best of friends and when my daughter was 1yr we added to the family by being given a gsd pup the same age as my daughter.
As our family carried on we lost our poodle then our staff but we gained my son and another gsd pup.
Both gsds grew up and were very close to my kids when they passed at the grand age of 12 and 11 it was a good learning curve for both kids they now apreciate the effort you need to put into dogs and other animals and that they should enjoy the time they have with them and although the dogs are animals they are always part of the family no matter what life throws our way

Just wish more people had the same attitude

It is sad and at this time of year numbers are going to go up. people don't respect people let alone dogs. When you get upset about rescue's just look on the forum at the amount of resues saved, like lady muck Casssie at my feet here where would she and a million others be without dog lovers who do rescue. Concentrate on just how much love molly gets from you and just think when you look through the photo gallery how many of us sad people filled up our camera's with pictures of our dogs and still we fall in love with everyother dog on here

Bandit was 9 years old when I had my son. My mum was horrified & thought I'd get rid of Bandit because he might hurt the baby.

I told her that was rubbish! He was introduced properly ot my son & my daughter 18 months later & he was a gem with them both. Both of them learned to stand by grabbing his scruff & pulling themselves up, he never so much as flinched.

As has already been said - if you can't handle a dog, you can't handle a child!!

Im exactly the same. Because of the way i am, i impulsive i jumped in to rehome a dog that was given up because of a family breakdown (lame excuse)We've decided not to take her as the distance between us makes it near impossible to introduce both dogs, the breeder doesnt know how she is with cats, and i aint prepared to take a dog, with out knowing her history and risk the life of my cat x

Meant to add. We will 100% be getting a rescue, but one thats closer to home. At least then we can meet up and socialise them together(walks and play), I feel like crap over this poor girl, but my 2 pets here have to come 1st. She's proberly be ok, but being up in london and we're down in wales, i work evenings and my oh all day, so finding the time to travel up and down to london is very difficult Smile

My parents had my childhood dog a year before I was born. He was amazing, he used to go everywhere with me, I too learnt to walk by pulling myself up on his back. He always looked after me and followed me to the park to 'keep an eye on me'. When the older kids bullied me he would growl at them, they never tried to take my sweets again after he chased them up the road! Oh he was a card RIP Angus Love Struck

I had dogs all my life. My older sister was the biggest dogs lover I ever knew. Every dog we had was brought by her from the street, she was crazy. My last dog ,which was a a pup of my previous dog, died just 2 years ago. I cried like a baby. Now we've got Debo and he is a part of the family,we're trying for a baby and it never crossed our minds to get rid of Debo. He's my baby. Some of our friends say that we treat him like a child ,when he's just a dog. Yep. And you are just a human ,what so special about you?

Marley and Me is literally the only film that's ever made me cry Laughing. But yeah, I agree, people often see dogs as things you can replace. I remember a guy I know was talking about how he took his hamster to the vet for an operation and it died, and the vet was telling him that he's sorry and that it's nice to see someone willing to pay to try to save their hamster when most people would just let it die and get a new one cos they're so cheap. Similar thing, I suppose. I think a lot of people forget dogs are truly alive and have their own personalities and need to learn, as opposed to being realistic objects that automatically obey you. Stupid.
