Question on the crate through the night
Hello everyone,
My situation is I live in a multistory house above a shop so only have a front and rear balcony, though the rear is a flat roof which has a wall around it and is approximately 25x10ft so it's pretty decent all be it without grass..
So Tia has the room directly below this space which is the kitchen in a crate and plenty of room to play, sleep etc. now I have pads down which I'm using to mop up her wee in the hope she starts to use them, no joy. She is going everywhere but on them though it is in the vicinity.
When I take her outside after meals and thought the day she has had 3 poo's outside and none inside, so really happy with that but no wee.
Her first night last night so I was testing the water pardon the pun, kitchen door was shut but crate was left open, she had gone to wee and a poo, both outside the crate.
My question is should be closing the crate through the night, but getting up every 2/3 hours to take her out in the hopes she doesn't soil her crate in the meantime?, this could speed up the process and by pass the pads all together but I don't want to make things worse than what they are..
What do you think?, thanks in advance

Re: Question on the crate through the night
At what time at night is she fed and what is she fed ?
Have you noticed if she has a drink after having her dinner ?
It's unlikely she will soiled in her crate, a dog will mostly not mess it's bedding.
If you are able to get up to take her out for widdles during the night then do so.
We have a crate for Rocky but he rarely goes in it and the door is always left open, however we got him when he was 9 months old and house trained already.

Re: Question on the crate through the night
Thanks.
To be honest she was so well prepared in the crate sense so I was just making sure there wasn't something else I could try, but I guess I go the whole Crate training regime

Re: Question on the crate through the night
We used to take Tip out every three hours at night when she was smaller or if she waked us up. Now at six months she sleeps all night without needing to go out. It does get better.

Re: Question on the crate through the night
I'm not at all anti crate training provided it's taught in the right way and done for the right reason, and provided it's not for long periods of time. It's never going to be a shortcut to training, in fact it can be counter productive as the dog will only ever learn what he happens to do that he feels works, and that might not be what you'd like him to learn. Although most dogs won't soil their crate, others will and in that case you are letting him learn that where he needs to go, instead of outside.
I'm a bit confused as to why you're asking here. Various people have given you good advice elsewhere that is proven to work but it feels like you're looking for shortcuts. There is no shortcut to good learning, it will take an individual, of any species, the time it takes. Swapping around and trying to find a shortcut will only result in confusion. Your pup needs patience and consistency.
