Puppy Growling
Hi All,
This is my first time on a forum like this, I just got my first Staffy puppy 6 weeks ago. He is 3 and 1/2 months. We really love going to dog beach and dog park, but I've noticed that he can growl at other dogs sometimes. I try and notice if it's a male since he is a male too, but haven't seen a definite pattern yet as to whether or not he does it to males only. I think this growl is different than his play growl. Any advice? Thanks.

Re: Puppy Growling
How are the dogs with him? Are they boisterous/pushy/much bigger than him? He's still very young.. possibly fear, maybe play.. staffs are very vocal as a breed! Biscuit growls at her doggy friends all of the time in play! She also growls at me when she's excited.. but her body language is happy! What is his body language like when dogs approach? Try not to worry too much.. you don't want to transmit any negative feelings onto dogs approaching

Hi Becky and welcome to the forum. I have moved your topic so it will get more views. Tbh at that age it isn't aggression so don't worry just stick to training.
Maybe you could come and say hi...

Re: Puppy Growling
As Janey says he is young to be showing any signs of agression, more likely to be excitement. Body language link below should help you for signs of what to watch for:

Re: Puppy Growling
Thanks so much for the advice, it's a huge relief to know that it's too early to tell if it's aggression. He does it to dogs that are very calm around him, not overbearing at all. And it's not all of the time, he will chase and play with dogs, and then there are some that he gets vocal with. Is there training that should be done in regards to aggression or a dog being vocal with other dogs?
Thanks again, very glad to have found this forum

Sometimes Darcy can be a bit unpredictable on lead but fine off, like janey said far to young to be showing aggression. We like pics too

I will post a pic up later today when I get home from work. Is there place where I can see all of your pup's pics?

Yes, just have a look through the gallery sections!

It's very rare for a youngster like that to show aggression. However, staffords are known to be very vocal when they play and that could be what he's doing.
As long as his hackles aren't raised and he isn't going stiff legged with his tail held stiffly upwards then I doubt very much if it's anything to be concerned about.
