Hi every one,

My wife and I have been trying to get an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier and we finally found one that we love and put a deposit on down for him. We have just found out that he is the only puppy in the litter is this a problem at all for his health in anyway. We are still very happy with him and to us he looks fine but we had no other puppies to compare him to. I am not saying that I do not want him just a bit worry if he is not going to be healthy.

Is there any chance of there being any problems with him after we pick him up at 8 weeks. He is from a registered breeder and they have stated that he should be fine and there is nothing to worry about, but when I asked if I would be able to breed him at a later date so we can have another puppy from him. And they said probably cannot use him in there breeding program.

First time Staffy owner just a bit worried about getting the short end of the stick that is all.

They probably wouldn't be able to use him in their breeding program as they tend not to breed 2 dogs that are a close relative.
I wouldn't worry too much about him being the only pup. We have members on here who have the only surviving pup from a litter and they are perfectly healthy.

Thanks BluestaffBlue, we were just a little bit worried about it at first because we did not realise that it was possible for dogs to have just one puppy. If it help the mother looked very young to me only about 2 years onld but thats just a guess.

We just cant wait to get him home to be honest and we will post some pic when we do get him.

My pup was one of a litter of eight, he is the only survivor, one was stillborn and the others died within a month of being born. My boy is very healthy and a happy, normal pup, completely unaffected.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the pup, believe me, they completely turn your world upside down and wriggle into your hearts in a very short space of time!! You'll never look back after your first staffie Smile

As there are no other pups to play with he wont be getting the early socialisation he would normally and wont be learning the important lessons do do with nipping and what is or is not acceptable etc. They learn an awful lot from both mum and litter mates which is partly why good breeders wont sell u a pup till its 8 weeks so it doesnt miss out on that early socialisation. But saying all that as shontelle says she has charlie and he is absolutley fine! You will just have to make sure that as soon as u get him & hes vac you work really hard to safely socalise him and make sure you are very consistant with his training!
Good luck he sounds lovely! x

Charlie is fab with dogs we meet when we're out. While you're waiting til after his jabs to take him out, it'll be a good idea to have friends come round with dogs if you know anyone with them? As long as you are firm and consistent like Blaze says, you'll be fine. If you can get in some playtime with dogs that have been vaccinated before you take him out, that will be a bonus Smile

If he's not too big, put a nice warm jacket on, and slide him inside and go for walks like that, it's a great way to get a pup used to the area. We did this with Molly until she was fully vaccinated, it's also warmer for them, we got her in February last year, so it was pretty cold! (It's also helpful when their little legs won't carry on walking)
As Shontelle said, if you can get some playtime with vaccinated dogs in your house, that'll help loads.

Welcome !!!!! only pup should not be a problem. This is not a reason for your puppy to be more exposed to problems than any other dog!!!!!! I would even say a good healthy puppy which got all the milk, all the attention from his mother want would you want more Wink

Congrats on your pup! I wouldnt of thought it would be a problem. Logan was part of a big litter and he has health problems. I think its just hit and miss sometimes.

There is some great advice here too.

Hello. wave

Our Bodhi was the only surviving puppy in his litter and he was also 6 days premature but he is perfectley healthy, happy and a normal puppy.

To socialise him they used to let him play with their Chihuahuas and they would put him in his place, don't think they would manage now though..lol.

Congrats on your puppy and await to see some pics. x

There should be no reason to worry about health issues with a one puppy litter than a numerous puppy litter, was both parents health tested and kc registered.
Many breeders may put endorsments on puppies from there breeding line and before you buy you need to be aware if there will be any restrictions for the future of your dog.
Cant wait to see the pics and a sole puppy will have had the best of everything from the mother so dont worry.
