Advice & Tips would be welcome..... Empty Advice & Tips would be welcome.....

Post by Rob1978 Tue Dec 03 2013, 16:17

Hello All,

I have a 14 week old male currently and on Saturday we got ourselves an 8 week old female to join him, does anyone have any tips on how we can help them get along etc?
Just as a bit more information they are not being aggressive but the female growls and barks a lot (Jax my male does not respond) when they are playing but when they sleep, the both cuddle up together already so I am not concerned too much but any tips would be welcomed

Thanks,

Rob (oh and Jax & Roxy)

Just keep watching them. They both are really very young and things will change almost daily. As long as you are careful and do all the proper training, you should be ok. I wouldn’t worry too much, but do be careful with such a young pup! 8 weeks is a bit young.

I agree with Ben. Just keep an eye on them.

The usual advice is to wait until one dog is about 12 - 18 months old before getting another pup because the training can be hell, and young pups will often bond more strongly with each other than their human family.

At 8 weeks old, the little bitch pup won't be being aggressive anyway, just very vocal & boisterous!

Your mad! 2 pups so close in age - you are going to have to put a lot of time doing a lot of 1-2-1 training with both of them!

They will both need to attend training classes, lots of socialisation etc - it's hard work. Good luck.

As others had said, if I were advising before you took in the second pup, I would have recommended not to! They will bond very closely with other, and are at different stages, so need different socialization/training etc. It'll be lots of one to one work! As Caryll stated, at 8 weeks it won't be aggression, but as with any interactions, just monitor closely.

Hi All,

We did not intend to take on another pup so soon, but trust me if you had seen the condition this woman was keeping in them you would understand why we simply had to take at least one, we have since contacting the RSPCA about the woman as well and they will be investigating.

Anyway.......Jax the older boy is doing amazingly well, already toilet and house trained, walking on the lead brilliantly (most of the time), the younger pup was never given newspaper or puppy pads so she has found it hard figuring out where to go to the toilet but yesterday my girlfriend kept a close on her and she only missed the newspaper once, so I think it is sinking in. I appreciate we are going to have to spend lots of time 1-2-1 and yes, it will be hard work but it will be worth it in the long run.

the growling while she is playing has toned down a little, she barks a lot which is amusing because Jax does not ever bark (i think 3 times since we had him) so I guess she will be the noisy one!

Oh bless her Sad Such a tough situation, so glad she's not in those conditions anymore! It's great that you've already got the basics down with Jax (love his name Love Struck ) I guess it's just a case of maintaining them, whilst training her from scratch, which you have obviously been capable of doing before!

Given the conditions she came from, she may need gentler socialization if she hasn't been exposed to many nice experiences so early on. Luckily she's young, and you can now begin to mould her experiences to be all positive ones! Smile
