HELP! 13 wk old pup on the way and need some tips/advice please!!
Hello everybody, I am collecting my new puppy Gabbi from the RSPCA on Friday!!
I need to go urgent shopping tomorrow as was only told today that I had passed the house test
I have come up with a list of things I need, is there anything else and can I get answers to my queries please??
1) Crate - I'm struggling to find a definitive answer as to what size she will need when fully grown, the only specific figures I have found are from one person on Yahoo but I don't want to rely on one persons statement. The size I've seen is 36 x 24 x 27 (inches) / 91 x 61 x 69 (cm) - Is this correct? Too big? Too small?
2) Bedding - No queries!
3) Bowls x 2 - I'll get tip-proof stainless steel if I can
4) Adjustible puppy collar and lead - No queries!
5) ID Tag - No queries!
6) Toys - any suggestions for "chew toys" to try and preserve my furniture?!
7) Grooming brush - do i just need a "soft" brush? How often do I groom her??
8. Food - she's on James Wellbeloved complete puppy food, so I presume it's best to stick to that?
9) Poop scoop / Poop bags
10) Treats - are there any simple treats I can make myself eg. bits of fruit & veg or is that a no no??
Any replies (ASAP please!!) would be gratefully accepted, i'm beginning to panic!
In particular I really need advice re the crate size please!!!
Thanks all.

Re: HELP! 13 wk old pup on the way and need some tips/advice please!!
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Please see the link for a crate which I think would be suitable, medium size at a good price.
http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=771&pf_id=57837
For chew toys have a look at Amazon they would probably have the bowls you are after too.
If she is on James Welbeloved puppy food I would stay with this as it is a fairly good one anyway, (this is what Rocky is on only the adult version). If you do decide to change her food this should be done gradually to avoid upset tummy.
You may want to feed her with a Kong, this will help to slow her down when eating, again see link to Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Classic-Kong-Red-Dog-Chew/dp/B002XGAVIA/ref=sr_1_5?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1331153805&sr=1-5
Hope this helps.

So would that "medium" crate be ok for when she's fully grown?

Re: HELP! 13 wk old pup on the way and need some tips/advice please!!
Get the biggest crate you can afford/fit in your house. The bigger the better, as though your buying for a lion.
Squeaky plastic toys are good, I suggest you visit your local pound shop and stock up because they always get destroyed/get lost!
Please don't give her tennis balls as they wear down the dentine on the teeth.
James wellbeloved is a very high quality food, best to stick to it.
Staffies only need a light brush once a week, i'll admit i've never brushed my dog, he just doesn't need it. You can rub her fur with a towel or shammy leather to really make it shine. A soft bristled brush would be best.
It might be a good idea to have handy a few first aid items, bandages, antiseptic cream and blood stippler incase a nail gets snagged or something.
Dog shampoo would be good, although its not a good idea to bath a dog more then once every six weeks.
Lots of staffies like fruit and veg. My dog likes apples and Carrots. Remember never feed your dog grapes, raisens, any sort of fruit stone/seed (including apple) or onion. When my dog was a pup he really liked the puppy bono biscuits. When shes a bit older raw lamb ribs are a great treat.
Any sort of poo bag will do-if you can't find them in the supermarket get nappy bags, they're pretty much the same thing.

Thank you very much shakespeares, this is the kind of info I was hoping for. I've done plenty of research so pretty much know what I need to get/do but feel a bit nervous now lol. Re the crate size I'll follow the principle "bigger is better" then!!

hi and welcome...exciting times ahead for you!
when your pup starts teething put some carrots in the freezer, or make up some giant ice blocks..they are soothing on their gums....just make sure there are lots of safe things for chewing around !

Hi and welcome from Misty and me. I bet you are counting the days. Well done for being so organised.
Yes get a soft brush, I eventually found a soft one with a plastic handle (black and red )at Pet At Home, it is actually a cat brush. Very little choice, they have wooden handled but looked very cheaply made or wire ones that are suitable for long haired dogs. Good luck .

8pawprints; i know what you mean about the brush, couldn't find one a pets at home, didn't think of the cat section (good tip!) managed to find one that looks quite soothing at the RSPCA though not tried it yet!
