tips or advice needed please
hi
when we got george he was 8 months old and had been trained wonderfully . hes still very willing to learn new things and improve on old ones but weve got a little problem trying to stop him stealing my chickens food
he knows the leave command very well - wont eat his food until we say go on then and i can put a treat down, tell him to leave and he obeys until i say go on then
but he comes down the chicken run with me , sees the food leaves it when i tell him but after coming indoors hes desperate to get out again and as soon as the door is opened , even more than an hour later he flies down the path and goes totally deaf to my leave command ...even the rooster or my top hen having a go at him doesnt put him off hes just GOT to eat it
were not talking scraps or meat here , its dried meal worms , sunflower seeds and the odd cooked egg..if there nothing in the trough he heads for the feeder - mixed corn and , although not as much as previously , chicken poo...the waremer the better
seems silly that im buying food for him that is grain free then hes eating grains anyway
im a bit nervous about the corn eating and have already stopped giving the chooks grapes and sultanas incase george steals them
the poor chooks are missing out on their treats and have already gone on strike with the egg laying in protest
any tips anyone or should i just improve his leave trick

Re: tips or advice needed please
I know I shouldn't but I have just had a snigger Kath
I think George see's this as a little treat and thinks he's getting one over on you. My Flo will eat the Parotts overspill so eating seeds is really nothing too unusual I'm afraid.
As for stopping him, you could keep trying the leave command which I would suggest or can you find a way to keep George away from their food... Especially if the chooks are going on egg strike !

The only thing I can think of would be to put something up that keeps him away from the food

Re: tips or advice needed please
thanks
hes a little monkey ..i managed to let the chooks out and stop him from eating their breakfast but hes nagging me constantly to open the door ...hes even howling this morning as the chooks every Monday morning get the left over pancakes from Sunday tea ...maybe there's jealousy there - why should those pesky birds get pancakes and he cant
