Learning to eat separately Empty Learning to eat separately

Post by Leon SA Tue Nov 19 2013, 08:25

Hi Guys, my pups (Spud and Suki) are now goeing for 10 weeks and they are doing fine. I am trying to teach them to eat separately (each one out of his own bowl). If I put both in 1 room however they run up and down between the bowls or eat out of ! bowl. If I put them in seperate rooms 1 or both of them cry and refuse to eat. Any suggestions?

Can you partition the room with a baby gate so they can still see each other and still feed in the same room ?

Great advice above - especially when it comes to a baby gate

I always think it's a bad mistake (and possibly dangerous) to feed dogs out of the same bowl.

As above, I'd start by having something physical separating them while they eat, or if you can't do that, then you stand between them to ensure they only eat their own food from their own bowl.

Two dogs eating from the same bowl could cause food aggression, but could also mean that one dog is eating too much and the other not enough.

I honstly don't understand why anybody would start feeding their dogs from one bowl in the first place, though.

I have to agree with Caryll there. When Vinny first came home we would feed them separated by a baby gate. Now, Vinny's always been a guzzle-guts and since changing to a raw diet, we feed them in the garden, my OH standing with one of them and me with the other and we simply redirect them back to their own bowls if one should wonder over. I've got to the stage where when Vin finishes first, he will lay down and wait for Rox to finish Smile

Let us know how you get on!
