Post by Beau&co Fri Jul 25 2014, 22:40

Hi beau is now 12 weeks and is really great at sit, but we're having a bit of a problem with stay at the moment! Can you guys give us any pointers please? She just loves being right by your side bless her.

We taught Suki by using treats. We would have her sit and slowly back away after the stay command. We slowly increased the time and distance and now she is pretty good at stay

We always use treats as Suki is completly food motivated. Makes training her fairly easy

I used treats. I would get her into a sit or down, give the command 'stay' then slowly back away.
If she moved towards me I would gently take her back and repeat the exercise without saying anything.
Big praise and treat when she did it. Start with just stepping away one or two steps.
Just go slowly and build up the distance. Just practice and patience  Smile Smile

One thing that hasn't been clarified... It's important that you don't then call them too you for the reward. You must approach them while they're still in the stay position to reinforce that staying is the reason for the reward.
If you call them it confuses them in terms of being rewarded for coming.
