healthy treats
Hello everyone. I haven't posted before but have been reading all the good advice on here for a while. I have a young dog (just over a year) who is just a tad hyper. I have changed her food to Chappie and Harrington's following the advice of a dog trainer. However it has just occurred to me that I give her lots of little treats and chew bars which are probably full of additives and are adding to her behaviour problems. Can anyone suggest good quality treats that I can feed her (she is very food focused and I find them really useful in training and recall)

Re: healthy treats
How about small pieces of chicken, I know it's a pain but a Baggie with lots of small bits can be kept in the fridge and taken out for training, out on walks e.t.c.

Re: healthy treats
The recipe below is for Ella's famous liver cake, maybe give this a go and create your own very tasty and healthy treats:

Re: healthy treats
Not overly keen on the chappie, I would probably try a better wet tray if needed, I used to use cats biscuits, much smaller and they love em

Re: healthy treats
I'd agree with that, the only time I give Zeus chappie is when his colitis flares up and he needs something light to eat for a few days, I wouldn't give it as a permanent food though. If you want to add wet, try Wainwrights wet tray from Pets At Home, good value, good nutritional content and they're always on offer.janey wrote:Not overly keen on the chappie, I would probably try a better wet tray if needed, I used to use cats biscuits, much smaller and they love em

Re: healthy treats
thanks for your advice. I will try making the liver cakes this weekend. She is not a fussy dog and will eat any kind of food given to her so I'm sure she won't mind if I change from Chappie to Wainrights- can you buy this one in supermarkets or just in specialist pet stores?

Re: healthy treats
Fish4Dogs treats are very good, but also a little expensive. The problem I found wass finding healthy treats that are also of high enough value to train with, the Fish4Dogs are very smelly which helps with trickier training, but Biscuit also loves banana, blueberries, apple and carrot.. though wouldn't jump through hoops for them in the same way that she would for chicken, liver or cheese! Her main chews are bones from the butchers, though she does have the odd cheap treat here and there if friends buy them for her. Oh and instead of chews she has healthy stuffed kongs, they last her longer and aren't full of rubbish!

Re: healthy treats
Mine are both now currently fed on raw food! Before they were fed on Arden Grange, which you can buy online or buy from Pets At Home. I'd highly recommend it!
For treats you can give her RAW chicken wings, the bones shouldn't be too hard for her to eat and it's great for enrichment and is a lot better than feeding the commercial chews. Mine love carrots, steamed broccoli, cabbage stalks and apples (cut out the core and ensure no pips are left)! Many people do, but I really dislike the "meaty" chews such as shmackos as they give my 2 the toots! I only ever give biscuit treats - charcoal bones in particular as they stop bad smells try freezing a banana for your pooch! In the hotter months, you can also make your own ice pops - get unsalted gravy/oxo/broth mix and small bits of raw meat, add a chunk of meat to the unsalted gravy and water mix and freeze! She'll love it I'm sure you could also try with a Kong! Smooth some peanut butter inside and it'll keep her entertained for ages
My two also get a tea spoon of honey every other day after dinner which they love

I make all my own treats, so at the moment they are eating cheese and cranberry cookies!
