Re: what to look for when head starts splitting
Their heads don't split, I'm afraid.
What happens is that their muscles become stronger & more defined, which results in that furrow on the top of their head.

Re: what to look for when head starts splitting
It is just that, a term. The head does not literally 'split' as some misinformaed owners may think. The shape or structure of the skull does not change at all, as Caryll has said this 'term' refers to the increase in muscle size in the face with the muscles on the top of the head and cheeks starting to get bigger and more defined.
I think you are meaning at this age is there anything behavioural you need to look out for? As this usually happens around sexual maturity you will need to watch for obvious issues such as mounting, dominance etc. At 5 months I wouldn't think you would have any of these issue just yet.
What in particular were you refering to when you say 'signs', signs of what?

Re: what to look for when head starts splitting
if hes tipping his head from side to side I would be worried about an ear infection or similar.

Re: what to look for when head starts splitting
they use that term where i live also but as caryll says there head dont acctully split.
the head tilting could be an ear infection or ear mites keep an eye on it if it carries on consult your vets
ps it may simply be the way he gives puppy eyes to you as iv noticed mine does that sometimes

Re: what to look for when head starts splitting
The head tipping could be any number of things, from just the way they 'look' at you with that sad but inquisitive look to an infection/mites.
If he isn't shaking his head as well, then I'd say it was just the way they look at you - really cute!!
