Neutering is there an ideal age
My vet has said I am best to get Millie done before she has her first season, she reckons Staffies are normally around 7/8 month mark, she has booked me in for 3 weeks time Millie will be 6 months this Wed.

Re: Neutering is there an ideal age
yes never
I personally do not neuter as to me there are much more health benefits to keeping dogs entire, plus there is no unnecessary risk of the GA
BUT if you are insistent of getting them neutered i would always recommend waiting until a dog is mentally and physically mature at 2 years +

Our vet has suggested we have Pebbles spayed a couple of months after her first season...so she will be around 9 or 10 months old when she has the op.
However this is just what the vet would like us to do We are still unsure whether she should have one litter of puppies before being spayed.

I would love not to and let her have a litter of pups but it just isn't feasible, my vet says there is a lot of pros that outway the cons, saying it reduces the risk of cancer by 90%.Broxi wrote:It's up to you and what age you want to do it at the end of the day,me personally if i was to do it i would always wait till he/she was around 2, but like ella says i dont agree with it and like to keep my dogs natural

she never needs to have a litter of puppies either way.doogz wrote:I would love not to and let her have a litter of pups but it just isn't feasible, my vet says there is a lot of pros that outway the cons, saying it reduces the risk of cancer by 90%.Broxi wrote:It's up to you and what age you want to do it at the end of the day,me personally if i was to do it i would always wait till he/she was around 2, but like ella says i dont agree with it and like to keep my dogs natural
Did you read the link i posted, really the best for her is to wait until she is mature first before neutering, having puppies does not and should not ever come in to it

Re: Neutering is there an ideal age
Thanks for that link Ella I have had a quick look at it, I will sit down later and take my time going through it.
I have always thought that you should wait till the dog is mature before going through with it.
I did mention that to 2 vetiranary nurses within my practice and both of them are saying no, it's better to do it when they are younger.
I feel bad even mentioning it on here now.

Re: Neutering is there an ideal age
vets are far to pro neutering, and most of them follow outdated research and advice. Which is why you should let you dog mature before neutering if you are set on it, do not be bullied into by your vet

This what sums up most vets

Re: Neutering is there an ideal age
Although neutering does reduce certain health problems, it also increases others. With early neutering, especially, the cons far outweigh the pros! If you neuter before maturity you risk...doogz wrote:I have always thought that you should wait till the dog is mature before going through with it.

* late closure of the growth plates leading to a taller, narrower dog,
* possible permanent puppy syndrome,
* possible urinary incontinence,
* possibility of an increase in nervous aggression,
* increase in chances of bone & prostate cancer.
Unfortunately that's what vets/veterinary nurses want - they Want you to feel bad for asking & researching before making your decisions.doogz wrote:I feel bad even mentioning it on here now.
Never feel bad about asking a question. If it's important enough to ask, then ask!
