Very sore paws
Sheba is on day two at home after coming from a rescue where she has been for five months. At the rescue she was in a cement pen (which was hosed daily so was damp for some time each day) and was walked once to twice a day for short periods (15 minutes). Here she is on acreage with lots of grass (very dry at the moment) and wooden decking.
Her paws were quite pink when she came home, but I have noticed tonight that they are angry red and bleeding in small patches in some places. They also seem to be swollen round the pads and nail areas. They look and obviously are very painful as she is ' tender' when walking.
I have soaked/cleaned her paws and put some low dose steroid cream on them tonight (before you yell - it was all I had!) ... wondering if anyone has ideas for what I could do to help calm/treat them past tonight though?
Also - I am thinking that the change in environment (prickly grass etc) and additional exercise has caused her paws to become very sore, does that sound viable?? (She does have dermodex, but otherwise I can not see any further lumps/bumps/irritations that would indicate allergy. There is no smell and all four paws seem to be equally irritated)

Re: Very sore paws
Awww ouch they do look uncomfortable, the only thing I can thing of is if you can gently apply some aloe vera gel this may calm it down a bit for her.

Re: Very sore paws
Ooh, ouch! Poor thing!
The sudden change might have irritated her paws, which might already have been sensitive due to the demodex. Have you considered using booties when she's out on her walks or in the garden?

Thank you Kathy - will pop some in the fridge and give it a try.Kathy wrote:Awww ouch they do look uncomfortable, the only thing I can thing of is if you can gently apply some aloe vera gel this may calm it down a bit for her.
Thanks Eleanor. Should I expect irritated feet on an ongoing basis as a part of the dermodex then?Eleanor wrote:Ooh, ouch! Poor thing!

I did think of booties - though she has free access to the full yard so I think she would need to keep them on fairy routinely. I was unsure if this would be okay, and also of were to even look to find them in the first place

Re: Very sore paws
I'm honestly not sure, Kell My guess is that her paws will hopefully become less irritated once the Demodex clears up.
A lot of pet shops sell booties. You could also try asking your vet if he/she recommends any.
Mum said to recommend coconut oil, as it's been shown to be very effective against sore patches.

Aww poor girly they look so sore as you know darcy has allergies and regularly has irritated paws we use coconut oil too but dermactin cream clears them up a treat

Re: Very sore paws
You can get disposable booties from amazon. They're only lightweight so will help her paws harden up a bit, whilst protecting against allergens.
Dermactin or coconut oil may also help.

Re: Very sore paws
Does she lick them? My bitch is always licking her paws, it could be anxiety. Propolis gel is good, soothing but made from honey so you have to watch for licking lol
Poor baby hope they get better soon xx

Re: Very sore paws
I'm sure apart from the coconut oil you can use cider vinegar on sore paws. I know it is good for yeast infections. Mind looking at them they look really red

Wouldn't the iodine sting a bit, Claire?

I'm not sure Lynda, I would think cider vinegar would sting a bit too. It is supposed to help due to anti viral, anti fungal and disinfectant purposes.

Can't really suggest anything other than whats already been said. I hope they improve soon, poor Sheba xx

Re: Very sore paws
Thanks - I only asked because my dog has white paws which show red inside and he often licks at them (only the front paws, and not nearly as bad as poor Sheba's). He's bad enough at having his feet even touched, but if I put something on that stung him I would never get near his feet again!Chiara wrote:I'm not sure Lynda, I would think cider vinegar would sting a bit too. Re: Very sore paws
Oh poor thing, good advice though, I've used coconut oil in the past and is really good for soothing / moisturising, full of anti microbial, anti bacterial good stuff as well. Hope Sheba feels better soon x

Re: Very sore paws
Thank you everyone for your suggestions - very much appreciated
I gave her some Tramadol this morning as she was very sore and kept laying down to lick her paws after every few steps. Confining her to the deck and inside today seems to have helped some though, and they are less red and bloody tonight.
Have ordered coconut oil and booties and our local horse store is trying to get the cream suggested as well. Have decided I will give the ACV and soak a miss for now incase they do sting ... will try if the others don't do the trick though.
Thanks again x

Re: Very sore paws
Sorry I missed your message Eleanor!
Thanks for asking after Sheba Eleanor and Maria Her paws are still a little tender on rocks or the pavement, however all the redness, blood and swelling have calmed ... a mix of aloe, coconut oil and the booties seem to have done the trick.
Thank you again to all for the suggestions x
