Help my 13 week old pup has got a skin problem
Hi I have had my staff pup for just over 4 weeks she was fine when I brought her home after a few days she started to scratch. I have mentioned this to my vet on numerous occasions he has just suggested to change washing powder and use a hypoallergenic shampoo which I have done. Over the four weeks scratching has got worse and I have noticed her fur is thinner in places where she scratches the most. Yesterday I went to a different vet as I was loosing patcience with vet I had been to. New vet told me it looked like demodex mites and he gave her a vaccination to stop the mites. he told me if she stops itching within 24 hrs then that's what it is. Unfortunately the scratching has been worse than ever today, I feel so helpless and feel like im letting lola down I am ffeding her on hills science dried all her vaccinations are up to date

Hi and welcome to the forum
It could be demodex but I'm surprised the vet didn't do a skin scrape to check? What was the injection they gave?

Re: Help my 13 week old pup has got a skin problem
Not sure I am due to take her back on Friday follow up appointment so I can find out then, Just need something to soothe her I asked my first vet if I could give her piriton and they told me no, Do you know if there is anything I can put on her skin to soothe her some one has suggested camrosa oil bu I am wooried about using anything as I don't want to make it worse. This is so distressing I have actually cried today as I don't like seeing her like thisSazzle wrote:Hi and welcome to the forum

Awww I know, its awful to see our babies distressed. I have given Daisy piriton (as have other members on here) but if the vet advised not to there must be a reason? Not sure if coconut oil would help sooth her skin, let me look for a past thread on it.

Let us know how you get on x
And just to reassure you, if it is Demodex, it is very common, it can be treated easily and Lola will get better x

Re: Help my 13 week old pup has got a skin problem
Camrosa is very good, and isn't known to cause any allergies. It has been used to get rid of demodectic mites, if that's what this is. BUT. It is very messy! I know - I've used it on mine! You need to clean the area with a special shampoo first & once it's on, you need to use a special remover. If you're unsure, give them a ring at Camrosa; they are extremely helpful.janmc wrote: Do you know if there is anything I can put on her skin to soothe her some one has suggested camrosa oil bu I am wooried about using anything as I don't want to make it worse. In the meantime, most vets will tell you not to use Piriton because they can prescribe an animal specific antihistamine which is much more expensive! Unless she has an allergy to the anti histamine itself, then I can't see any reason why you shouldn't give her, say, half a tablet twice a day to see if it helps. If there's no improvement within 48 hours then I'd stop anyway, because it isn't doing anything! Use Piriton, not Piriteze.
I would also look at changing her food as Hills has been known to make dogs itch a little (not all, but some). Maybe a hypoalergenic food such as James Wellbeloved or Wainwrights (Pets at Home) or a fish based food such as Fish4dogs or Fishmongers Finest (again, Pets at Home).
Can I ask what colour your dog is?

Hi and welcome to the forum from me and the zoo xx
Hope your issue gets dealt with soon My Knox has a skin condition where he loses his fur, then it grows back, then he loses it again - vicious circle. It's been put down to seasonal allopecia.

Re: Help my 13 week old pup has got a skin problem
A lot of blues have skin problems esp if they have blue parents. Curse of overbreeding for colour. The best thing you can do is feed a high grade hypo-allergenic food, and possibly look into aloe vera or botanica clensing sprays, they are very good for relieving itching. I would avoid treats and food you dont know that your dog can tolerate or not, if you want treats use the dry kibble you feed, a dog gets more from the fact its getting a reward rather than what that reward is lol

This is very true. Do you know if your girl's parents were both blue?Hayley wrote:A lot of blues have skin problems esp if they have blue parents.
