Skin problem?? Empty Skin problem??

Post by Sar_Bear Sun Sep 23 2012, 05:32

Hi :-)

My blue staffy has some sort of skin problem and it seems to be getting worse.. i dont know how to describe it - he has lost the skin in the patches, red and dry. The patches are all over his body - some on his head, legs and body.

The photo isnt that great but you can sort of see what i am talking about, does anyone know what this may be and how to get rid of/ or reduce??

Hiya, welcome to the forum.

Few Q.

What do u feed ?
Has he been looked at by a vet ?
Any skin scrapes done ?
How long has it been going on for ?
What flea / worming product do u use ?

They can be prone to skin issues and allergies. I take it he scratches a lot too ? U can try giving him a piriton tablet to help ease the itching, main thing I feel is a vet check to rule out mites.

Hi

Thank you for your reply :-)

All my dogs are on a high protein dry food and also cooked mince once a day - they also get canned food every few weeks to mix it up

My vet gives me the worming tablets so i am not too sure what brand it is as it just comes in a little zip lock bag - i just use frontline for fleas

He doesnt itch or scratch though - As you can see in the pic they are bald spots, red and when i touch it they are dry

Think you need to visit your vet to address this

Hi & welcome.

I think you need to ask your vet for a skin scrape to rule out mites. In the meantime you could try giving a piriton tablet twice a day to see if it's an allergy.

Otherwise you could be looking at colour dilution alopecia. I hope not as it's really difficult to treat. What colour were your dog's parents?

The fact that both parents were blue drastically increases the chances of CDA. Sad

However, I'd rule everything else out first, so a skin scrape is a must.

My Jellybean is part blue (her dad is blue) and the same thing is happening to her. I've been giving her salmon oil in her food and it's been helping her skin dryness, but if it doesn't clear up (she has several spots all over too) I'll take her to the vet to see what's up. So maybe in the meantime try salmon oil or a piece of bread soaked in olive oil or sardines in olive oil.

Good luck

Please let us know the outcome as I'm sure it could help others with the same condition/symptoms. We could possibly make this a sticky for easy location.
