Staffy Skin Problem
Hey, I've joined this forum in the hope someone can help me or give some advice. I've got an 8 month old female staffy and recently she's developed red patches on her coat causing her hair to thin. These patches don't seem to irritate her and when I took her to the vet they took a skin scraping and she tested negative for mange so she was given a course of antibiotics and some shampoo, however it hasn't made a difference. We've taken her off high protein complete biscuit food to see if this helps but if anyone can give any advice that would be great. Thanks

Re: Staffy Skin Problem
Louby is suffering bad from skin problems. She did have mange and this seems to have gone, her last skin scrape was clear. But she is still suffering. The vet thinks she may have an allergy, so we switched her food to hypoallergenic James well beloved kibble, she can't have any treats or anything else. And she is on antihistamines. We are trying everything.
Maybe one of these things are worth a try???

Has she shown any improvement on the hypoallergenic food and antihistamines?? I know there is a way you can test what your staffy is allergic to but it's costly and I don't know if insurance covers it :/

Re: Staffy Skin Problem
She's only been on the food for around 4 weeks, and they say to give 6, and I do believe the antihistamines are working, she isn't itching as much, just waiting for her skin to calm down and go back to its normal colour.
The next thing would be allergy testing if the food and tablets don't work. I'm not sure of its covered by insurance. Her mange wasn't as they said it was ore existing cos we got her as a stray.
Good luck x

Re: Staffy Skin Problem
Hi and welcome to the forum
I would definitely say trying a hypoallergenic food is worth a try. If you do change food remember to do it gradually over at least a week.
Apple cider vinegar is good for skin problems, it can be added to their food or water.
You could try the dermacton spray or cream from the pet nat range (google it) that helps with itchy skin although I find a bit of sudo cream works well on sore spots.
I'm afraid I can't help with allergy testing but I think some people on here have had it done.
When you get chance maybe say hello here

Also maybe photo's of the sore spots may help someone to help you identify possible causes.

Hi, welcome to the forum.
What colour is your girl? Have you changed anything lately? Food, washing powder, cleaners etc?
What food do you give her at the moment & what sort of exercise does she get (I know that's a lot of questions, but the more we know, the more we might be able help!)?

Re: Staffy Skin Problem
Hi and thank you Sorry I haven't posted any pictures I'm new to this whole forum thing :S haha and she's brindle and white the patches are mainly on her white areas however there is one less inflamed on her brindle markings. Nothing has been changed that I know of only difference being she's stopped being picky about her food like she was when she was younger. She's on country value beef complete biscuit for working dogs as I know this may sound silly but she is surprisingly an amazing worker. She's out for varying amounts of time everyday usually 2 hours and longer if she wants to. So any ideas? Thanks

Re: Staffy Skin Problem
I'd defo recommend Dermacton spray and Apple cider vinegar daily. (1tblsp)
Food sensitivities could be an issue - go for a High meat content hypo allergenic food. I think strengthening her immune system with a B vitamin complex will help.

Re: Staffy Skin Problem
Belle has allergies. I got her tested to see what she had problems with........came back with a list ! She is now on a very small dose of Atopica which is ridiculously expensive but is covered by her Lifetime Insurance with Petplan. They pay up without any questions asked. I know having the tests is expensive but you will get to the bottom of the problem quickly.
Other advice - Dont use detergents such as Comfort when washing her bedding or sofa covers, beds etc.
It may be that she is a bit hormonal and if so, Evening Primrose capsules are excellent. You can buy online from Zipvit.
