Cut Toes
Hi All
Just had a question, hoping someone might know some info... My dog for probably the past 18 month to 2 years, seems to cut his front toes open when we take him for walks (on cement/road). It started with him wearing his toenails down so much they would bleed and progressed to him now actually wearing away the toe (skin) above the toenail.
We've taken him to a few vets during this time and just recently found one that was actually concerned about it. She said without doing xrays they can't tell the cause, but she was moving his front legs around and said the ankle part seems fine but his elbows were quite stiff. Although he was resisting her quite a bit! (She was trying to bring his paw up to his mouth) When I tried later at home he was moving much more fluently than at the vets. So for the moment she has given us some antiinflammatories to take for the next 3 weeks to see if that helps.
I have noticed that when he runs he seems to have "straight" legs and flicks them out to the sides. he doesn't bring them up in front of him like other dogs do.
Just wondered if anyone else encountered this and what the issue was. I've been reading up on elbow dysplasia and theres a lot of similarities

Re: Cut Toes
Hi, I'm sorry to hear Itachi is going through this, poor thing. Unfortunately I haven't any experience with this, but hopefully someone should be along shortly with some advice.
I hope the vet can find the cause soon x

Re: Cut Toes
Also, if you could upload some pics? That would be a great help for other members to see where exactly the problem is

Re: Cut Toes
Dishing walk is a conformation fault and not something that can be corrected. Its quite common in broad chested dogs. My advice is walk on grass and if you must walk on the path for long get him some booties. Get a size larger than required and stuff cotton wool in it

Oh poor Itachi, that looks very sore I have never seen this before, but Hayley's advice above is excellent, give that a go and see how it goes. Keep us updated, I hope walking on the grass helps keep those cuts away x

Re: Cut Toes
Thanks everyone. We've been making him walk on the grass for the last week or so which has helped a lot.
Do any of you know where to get shoes/booties from either in Perth or online? I ordered some from an Asian eBay store but they were way to small for him and where the biggest size I could find.

Re: Cut Toes
Those poor feet look so sore
Have you tried ebay? I have personally only seen them once in a pet store (Pet City in Brisbane) ... I do know you can get them from some of the boutique pet stores though.
