Itchy dog
Hi all,
haven't been on for a while as been very busy. Tash has suffered with itchy paws for some time now on and off, we took her to the vets who said grass seeds or something and to keep them washed and stuff, so we did. It cleared up a bit.
She's in her 3rd season and her paws are worse than ever, all 4 paws now and she has licked and nibbled them so much they have sores on them on the bits inbetween her pads, she was hobbling, cleaned it with boiled water with a bit of salt in it and put sudocrem or savlon on it, she's not hobbling as much now but today she has just been manic with the itching, going round on the floor scraping her bum (she was wormed last week) nibbling her back, her paws and anything she can get her teeth into.
ive just bathed her and her basket and blanket are in the wash.
Any other ideas or suggestions or do you think its a trip to the vets
Julia

Re: Itchy dog
Ahhh poor Tash is suffering from some kind of reaction to something or an infection of some kind. I would pop along to the vet or see another for a second opinion.

Re: Itchy dog
does sound like a yeast problem to me, normally on places like their feet, and it's made worse by them licking it and keeping it moist

Re: Itchy dog
hi thanks all, will take her tomorrow, she's sleeping now so maybe the bath helped her feel a bit better.

Re: Itchy dog
This sounds like either an allergy or an intolerance to something, possibly in her food. What do you feed her?

Re: Itchy dog
I would bathe the paws in a solution of apple cider vinegar every time you come back from a walk. Maybe invest in some doggie boots in case he has an allergy to grass/pollen etc?
Have you tried an exclusion diet? A month of just beef/beef products, a month of lamb/lamb products, a month of pork/pork products etc?

Re: Itchy dog
Are you using any harsh washing powders/liquids on his bedding, or on any sofas etc?
Have you tried using anti histamine pills?

Re: Itchy dog
Jax had the same issue with his paws - all red, irritated, would lick them constantly. He also would get the same irritation (bright pinky/red sore rash) under his arm pits and on his belly (which would come and go). We tried everything. It turned out he did have a case of demodex (although the vet was sure there was another contributor, because ALL of his paws got irritated and he was clear on his paws for mites)... it became very frustrating as nothing seemed to help his paws. But we finally found a solution after a lot of trial and error.
I guess I can tell you exactly what we did. It was the following:
- Stopped giving him ALL dog treats (instead, we used things like peanut butter, banana, apple, etc.)
- Started him on Natures Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Turkey Meal (grain-free diet with one single protein source)
- Started giving him 1 teaspoon of plain unsweetened probiotic yogurt daily (to prevent possible yeast build up on paws)
- Gave him 1 teaspoon of coconut oil with his food every other day.
- Rinsed his paws with cool water (no soaps) every single time he came back from a walk or outside to go potty. We also wiped down his belly and arm pits after walks just with a cool cloth.
- Bathed him 1-2 times per week in Tropiclean Oatmeal/Tea Tree Medicated Shampoo for dry and itchy skin (soaked his paws in this every evening before bed)
- Applied "Pawz Botanicals: Therapeutic Tee Tree Essences Cream" to his paws once a day after his foot soak.
After about 8 weeks of doing all of that, his paws are now 99% healed, the hair has grown back, and he's no longer chewing them to bits. I know that it can be really frustrating to not know the cause, but I would recommend sticking with whatever it is you decide to try consistently, as I know it took at least 3 weeks of doing the above for us to see any improvement. However, once we did see improvement the results seemed to appear greater every single day.

I suppose any high quality grain-free food would give the same benefits!
