puppy milk Empty puppy milk

Post by janfrost489 Thu Sep 26 2013, 07:44

Hi last night I went shopping and saw puppy milk on the shelves so I thought that I would get some for sasha as a treat. When I got home I gave her a small amount in her bowl and she loved it. This morning she has a real belly ache and her toilet is runny im wondering if she may be intolerant to it is this even possible as it says even for the most sensitive tummies on the pack. Its the only thing different that she has had so it must be that giving her a tummy ache needless to say that I have binned the rest Sad

Probably for the best, I have never tried puppy milk but I can only assume its for real young pups.
I don't think after having milk off Mum that they really need it.
Hope her tum is better soon xx

Most animals are lactose intolerant past the age of weaning. It is natures way of stopping them suckling on every lactating female.

I gave puppy milk to Zeus from when I got him until he was 7/8 months old, as a treat mainly, I never had a problem with it.

But, I tried giving him goats milk once and had similar problems to you, it didn't sit right with him at all.

Well you learn something new every day shame it was at Sasha's expense. Just had an update from home she has got over the upset tummy now and everything is back to normal. I guess its like everything in life you learn through experience raising a dog isnt as easy as people think unless you've got a puppy that can eat and drink practically anything and not be affected x

I wouldn't feel bad about it if I were you. Smile A lot of learning is through trial and error. Really, the packaging should have given a recommended age for feeding, but oh well.

A lot of what's sold as puppy milk is goats milk. May have just disagreed with her. Smile glad she's feeling better now!

Bruno had puppy milk until he was 8 weeks old as our breeder was giving it with every meal so we weaned him off it gradually.

I had to feed Nana with puppy milk when she got home because she was 25 days old. She loved it. Now she is almost 5-month-old and once in a while I still give her puppy milk as a treat. I asked my vet and he said it was ok, but never as a substitute of her meal. She still loves it. I give her "Royal Canin babydog milk». Never had problems with tummy aches or her toilet.

The people on here are so knowledgeable and always steer me in the right direction after my puppy milk mistake thought I had better ask before giving it to sasha just in case. Thanks as always xx
