staffy appearance
Hi,im new here and ive owned 2 staffies in the past. Both have now sadly passed away.I know im biased but my two were beautiful looking dogs with "bear" like faces and not the wide faces with poppy eyes.I dont mean to offend anyone but im looking at bringing another staff into our family and want a puppy from a reputable breeder who knows what i mean.sorry for babbling and hope i make sense xx emma

Hi & welcome. Hope you enjoy the forum.
I'm not sure what you mean by a 'bear' face. Maybe if you can post some pics of your previous dogs I'll understand!

Re: staffy appearance
Hi,when i say bear face its just he had a longer face.Ive just been looking at some images of "shady" and "loki" on this site and mine were nothing like those two.Jake was tall too and people used to comment on his lovely face all the time.He was a full staff but maybe they just all look different, just like people.I will post some pics though x

Re: staffy appearance
if i was you i would go and buy a kc regsitered staffy from a reputable breeder, sound like you want a pitbull type of dog.
Re: staffy appearance
i certainly dont want a pitbull type of dog whatsoever, never have never will.i have 3 children and am not a complete idiot.Just because i find some staffs better looking than others doesnt make me want a "pitbull" type dog at all!.of course i would buy from a reputable breeder,i have done plenty of research and have had 2 staffies before, what makes you think otherwise!

Re: staffy appearance
you just have to look around but i wouldn't buy a dog without real KC papers because staffy with out them can be class are type.
Re: staffy appearance
Yes of course i would get the kc papers and have done with every dog either myself or my family have owned. We always do research and contact the necessary breeders clubs for advice, and would never rush to get any dog.All i said was how some staffs look different to others.Like with people you can get stunners and downright ugly ones, cant you?

Re: staffy appearance
They're all different, I suppose that's why so many different types of people like them!
I assume that you prefer the more 'terrier' type of staff & if that's the case, there are still plenty of breeders producing that type - you'll just need to do a bit of in depth research.

Re: staffy appearance
Hi,yeah maybe, not sure what the terrier type looks like.Ive looked at lots of little staffies on here that remind me of our jake and i might have it set in my head that that is how they should look.I just remember our dog had quite long legs and a rounder face as opposed to the short stocky staffys with wider faces.Dont get me wrong he was very muscly and strong with a strong head but he just seemed to have a "kinder" face,i will post some pics, you must be imagining this horrendous looking dog im trying to describe

Not at all!
A 'terrier' type is longer legged, a little more athletic, perhaps, with a slightly less heavy head & a slightly longer muzzle. I'm willing to bet that's what your old boy looked like! So did my old Bandit.
Having said that, some of the bullier types I've seen on this forum have been extremely impressive! We all have our different tastes!

Re: staffy appearance
You can often get areally good, kind rescue dog that's great with kids if that's what you want to do. The rescue centres will be able to point you in the right direction.
Sometimes it's better to get a slightly older dog that can put up with the antics of a three year old!

Well i dont doubt it at all,my dog had very good lines and parents who i both saw,the mother was small.stocky and a bit ugly.He obviously got his looks from his father. There is no rule to say all staffs have to be small with bow legs and bulging eyes!.

Caryll,i do feel so sorry for all those poor staffies who end up in care but through no fault of its own not sure i would feel safe getting one.You dont know the background of the dog or its history, and weve always had dogs from puppies with papers etc.if i had no children id get one from a shelter no problem x

Re: staffy appearance
Good lines are the ones who are bred to the kc breed standard, it might not be everyones cup of tea and everyone has a opinion of what they want but breeders who dont health test and use the breed standard as a guide then dont continue to do right by the breed. We have lots of staff crosses around who have papers owners think cause they are provided with a pedigree its a good one there are lots of people out there who are ready to make money on our beloved breed .emmalou wrote:Well i dont doubt it at all,my dog had very good lines and parents who i both saw,the mother was small.stocky and a bit ugly.He obviously got his looks from his father. There is no rule to say all staffs have to be small with bow legs and bulging eyes!.
Would love to know what you think of the dog in my avitar pic is he the ugly type with short legs and poppy eyes ?

Nobody said that there was! If you look through the picture galleries on this forum you'll see all sorts of staffs - some bully, some terrier & everything in between.
gem wrote:Would love to know what you think of the dog in my avitar pic is he the ugly type with short legs and poppy eyes ?
This, to me, is a really good example of the breed - good length of leg, a strong body and a head with width & depth. Plus a certain something that seems to pull it all together - balance!

Re: staffy appearance
you have to be careful staffy with long legs can be class as a TYPE with longer muzzle can be class as type also 18" KC regsitered dog can also be class a TYPE .
these things you have to thinking about if you live in a place where you see dog wardens all time i would get a dog with in the kennel club standad because if you get your dog siezed you have a very good chance of getting it back.

Re: staffy appearance
I know what you mean.I think people are getting me wrong.im not saying my dog was as tall as a great dane,he just wansnt a little midget, but im not having people tell me hes not full pedigree because he was slightly taller.I had a choc lab and he was totally different to other choc labs, obviously no two dogs are the same, but because i prefer a certain look people are almost frothing at the mouth

contd, steve,my dog looked very similar to yours on your pic,and you must agree yours looks totally different to gems pic of hers. But noone is jumping up and down at you saying your dog must be some sort of cross.the way im describing my dog, people are imagining this 5ft tall mongrel with a nose like pinocchio.he wasnt vastly different, just slightly.I will post pics and you'll see what i mean

Re: staffy appearance
mmmm think id rather just have a staff.Do you see what i mean though about the face, thats what my first post was about just how i like the faces of the one above you just posted.i dont get how you can say it dont matter what it is as long as its brought up right,i thought the whole point of going to a decent breeder and getting all the papers was so you didnt get crosses and all sorts of stuff

Re: staffy appearance
This will be my last post on the matter emma and am going back to your original posts that you want a puppy from a reputable breeder with full papers I replied to you that I dont think you will get that because a reputable breeder breeds there dogs to look like what a staffordshire bull terrier should conform to (breed standard) ie the HEIGHT of the dog being in between 14-16 inches at the withers the (head and skull) SHORT,deep through with BROAD SKULL, very PRONOUNCED cheek muscles, distinctive stop, SHORT FOREFACE. They also make sure the breeding pair are health tested (the parents are clear of faulty genes ) so the puppies have a good healthy start to life.emmalou wrote:not being rude, gem.im not saying your dog is ugly or not full staff. The face just isnt that appealable to myself, hubby or other family members who have all agreed with me
I think all dogs are beutifull whatever there shape size or breed and would never come on here and disrespect anybody elses dog because it wasnt the type I like not sure about lockis pedigree but I know shadys is posted on here and if you check it out he has excellant lines in it he is registered by the english kennel club the one and only pedigree club that is reputable.
The dog on the top of the page is also a very good dog excellently bred .
My own dog also has a excellant pedigree he was bred by reputable breeders he may not be the sort of staff that you your partner and family like but there are lots of people who like that type I will not go into what he has acheived with his piggy squashy face and bulging eyes but thanks for your comments much appreciated.
Good luck in finding a puppy

Gem won't tell you this, but the dog in her avatar, as well as being a fantastic companion & much loved friend is actually a breed champion. In other words, he conforms to the standard to a very high degree. I have seen several pics of this dog & cannot, for the life of me, see bow legs and bulging eyes!
Whether he is the 'type' you and your family like is neither here nor there - he is what a stafford should be.
I know that there are more 'terrier type' staffs out there, and I assume that is what you want, but please don't run down other people's dogs on this forum just because they are not the 'type' that you like.

Re: staffy appearance
yeah, fair do's i shouldnt call other peoples dog's,that was rude of me,but i felt like i was being looked down on for preferring the look of one staff over another.Like you say several of the dogs are champions in some catergories and thats great but im just going off looks alone and im not for one minute suggesting theyre not well bred dogs.I just know when i finally get my pup he will be beautiful to me and will be loved which is all that matters
