Puppy food? Empty Puppy food?

Post by Rosie3 Fri Aug 02 2013, 16:35

Hi all, me again...

In your opinion, what is the best dry food that doesn't cost a bomb?

Funny how I've done the whole puppy thing twice before and know so much about it, yet there's always a question to ask! My parents paid for my previous dogs food but my partner and I will be totally responsible for our baby and have to watch our pennies somewhat.
We're definitely steering clear of pedigree and bakers (perfectly acceptable foods but it makes me wonder if they're spending all their money on advertising then what are they not spending their money on). My other two grown up boys living with my mum have first class dry food and nature diet wet food but I don't think we can afford something that premium. We're aiming somewhere in the middle.

Is there any in particular you recommend?

They are certainly not acceptable foods! Both are full of additives, and Bakers even has some ingredients that are known carcinogens!

You could have a look at Wainwrights - Pets at Home's own brand. A good, mid-priced food.

I just didn't want to offend anyone on here that does feed pedigree or bakers, but yes I'm of the same opinion. It's like feeding your children McDonald's every day.
However if it's what you can afford then it's better than nothing!

We were looking at wainwright's the other day. Very similar to James wellbeloved (which has never been the same since pedigree bought them). It's definitely one of the options.
We're also thinking about wet food as a treat now and then and will probably go for nature diet as it's what my others have.

I've found Wainwrights to be a good option for its reasonably priced, well balanced & Katy thrives on it. Big Grin

Hi

I use wainwrights mixed with nature diet, cooper is so calm, healthy, an his pops are perfectly consistent and like clockwork:) I add an egg every two days now.

He was on butchers puppy and pets at home mix when we got him as that was what they were using but changed it over as soon as I could.

Can't recommend our combination enough.

Again my kids have both been brought up on Wainwrights Puppy and Adult apart from a brief spell on Fish 4 Dogs due to boredom , and if I say so myself I have 2 beautiful , healthy specimens so I would certainly recommend it , I think about £39 for 15KG but if you keep an eye out you can often find offers on line for 20% off etc ( when I see these I just buy more , we go through about 1 15kg bag a month between both of mine

You can definitely buy Salmon Oil in the UK , I bought mine from the Fish 4 Dogs website but the dogs weren't keen on it Sad

Just googled it and there are loads of outlets for it Smile

I raised Bacchus on Orijen Puppy but changed after a supply problem over the Festive period ( it's imported from the US ). I now give him Eden which is made by a small company in the UK and is both hypoallergenic and holistic with an 80% 20% ratio and came out top of the dried foods in Which tests. If you check the prices it does initially appear very expensive but he is 1 year old and 20 kilos and I only feed him around 220gr. per day. I say around 220gr. because I am experimenting with quantities as he was slightly overweight on 250gr. per day.

Re Salmon Oil I get it from Fish4Dogs on-line and he gets 1 tsp in his morning meal, but am thinking of stopping this once my current supply is finished because Eden contains Omega3. etc.
