dog vomiting when out for walks.

My dads dog is around 2 and we saved him from the pound a few months back. Hes the best thing weve ever done as we were alwys skeptical about getting one from a pound. Not knowing were theyv been, why they've been handed in etc. Anyway I could ramble on all day. Hes been checked by vets after we got him and everything was ok. But when we take him for a walk no matter of the weather he vomates. We thought at first its the lead so changed to the harness but same thing he brings up foam like vomat. Anyone else had this problem???

Is he fed close to his walk times, or does he take in lots of water in one go?

Not it is not his feeding time and I wouldn't say he took in lots of water either.

Could he be going for a walk on an empty stomach so bringing up bile from the exercise?

I must try walking him before and after a feed just to see.

what sort of vomit is it, is it bringing up food, or yellow bile?

You don't want to feed his full meals before a walk because of the bloat risk, but if he has a completely empty stomach he could be bringing up the bile, so i'd give a couple of treats or biscuits before a walk to line his stomach

Saffy had kennel cough last year and it started a bit like you are describing. She hacked and vomited foam or small amounts of food on walks especially after running or getting excited. From what i remember this happened for a couple of weeks before she started to get really poorly with it.
Kennel cough doesn't last months though so if he's always done it it's probably not that.

Does he chew at grass on his walks?

Re: feeding. It's always best to not feed at least an hour either side of going for a walk.

I have the same issue with my dog, except it happens at random times at home. I've yet to see any pattern I can associate with it. I would describe it as foamy spit.

I've taken him to the vet and asked about it and he always checks out ok. Now I have started recording how often it happens so I can take back the results to the vet. Hopefully it's not something serious.

If you find a solution please let us know as i'm curious as to what causes it also.

Its like white foam he brings up. No he does not get excited before walks really. Its just wen hes out for a walk hes sick. He can run about the back all day without being sick tho thats what confusing me.

If they're not overexcited, not eaten before their walks, haven't chewed on grass on their walks - I'm at a loss, except to tentatively suggest that they drank water just before their walks and got a bit vigorous on their walk (David Beckham fell victim to this during a football match I remember) - the stomach can dump under vigorous exercise. Look how often footballers feel the need to spit during a match - dogs don't/can't spit !

If they are happy and cheerful in themselves, not losing condition and drink and eat up normally, I would be inclined not to worry overmuch.

thank u. It seems to be when he pants alot he wrenches. Im baffled to what it can be aswell. But musnt ne serious cuz hes still happy and eating.

could be a sign of mild bloat if nothing else is coming up except foam, ie from water not food. although its a bit of a tough one as alot of dogs can do the same will little or no ill effects afterwards. ive also seen foam come up when they have been eating grass. what are the stools like? any mucas at all?

no just mainly foam. I havnt seen or herd of him eating grass. Its when he pants heavy he ends up wrenching until hes sick.

I doubt there's anything serious wrong, but I'd pop to the vets just to make sure. It's possible that they can give you an antacid especially for dogs that may help.
