Collars in hot weather
Have any of you left your dogs collars off in this hot weather, I have, unless walking. Generally as a rule, she has a small thinner one (the one in her picture) to wear at home when I leave her if I go shopping, I like her to have it on just in case, otherwise she doesnt wear one around the house, but lately I just havent put it on when I pop out, thinking it may help keep her cooler ?????

Re: Collars in hot weather
Dempsey doesn't wear a collar indoors anyway, as the house is extremely secure with several big gates blocking any routes to the street.
A thin collar wouldn't make much of a difference, but a thick/padded collar most likely would make a small difference. It's more a question of psychological comfort than heat, really. Like when a lot of people remove watches and necklaces in the heat because it tricks the mind into believing you're cooler.

Blue hates it when I remove his collar. I think he thinks it's a medal. He just whines until I put it back on. Can't see there being a massive difference if you changed it for a thinner lighter one unless the other is really heavy and bulky

Re: Collars in hot weather
Tbh, I'd always favour no collar indoors in this weather. The space between the neck and collar is warm and dark and can potentially be a breeding ground for parasites and bacteria, particularly when the weather gets hot.

Rockys collar is off too, I wouldn't think it would make much of a difference heat wise, probably just more comfy for them

The boys don't wear collars in the house APART from their cooling collars but thats different

Re: Collars in hot weather
As Eleanor said, Dempsey never has his collar on indoors. There's just so many ways he could catch it on something & injure himself.

Frankie doesn't wear a collar unless he's going for a walk. He's always getting into things he shouldn't and I'd worry he'd catch it on something

Same with Ledger he only has a collar on for walks but I've even been walking on his harness in the heat he doesn't tend to pull but pants enough even on a short spin round the park and I don't like anything close round my neck when it's hot

Re: Collars in hot weather
as most of the above my two never have a collar on in the house. if i let them out in garden i will put it on as they seem to give houdini a run for his money... after they last escaped i screwed a 6 foot by three foot bit of wood onto the fence and took a big sigh as all was safe.
saturday while washing the car they dug underneath the fence and came happily around the house to see me... this weekend im now having to bury chicken wire a foot underneath the boundry of the garden, oh the joy.
i dont realy think a collar will bother them much anyway as i use julius k9 harnesses which cover alot of the back and it never seems to bother them at all in the heat despite being like a small jacket.

I never take Densils collar off - if somebody comes to the door we need to something with which to grab hold of him , and like previous posters - if he accidentally got out at least he would have his id disc on, there was a case nearby where I live recently where somebody has lost their dog with no collar on. It is microchipped, but anybody finding it wouldn't have a microchip reader and it is a lot easier to find the owner with contact details on their discs.

Re: Collars in hot weather
If people are worried about dogs escaping, you could try putting a baby gate up, or even two if you want an airlock system. Should do the trick.

We have a savic dog gate which is a lot higher than a normal baby gate - Densil jumped straight over it from a standing position! We now have to shut him in the lounge if somebody comes to the door as this is the way our house is laid out. I am hoping to be able to afford to build a porch over the front door at some time which will be a big help.

Re: Collars in hot weather
Roxy lives in her collar, she seems lost without it, the main reason for her wearing in full time is because it has her tag on it and she spends a lot of time in the garden.

Re: Collars in hot weather
Boss was bought an ezydog collar as they looked comfy and the reason was to wear ALL the time incase he ever did get out so people seen his tags and he could be returned but its rather bulky and he doesnt mind it out doors but refuses to wear it in the house so Boss never has a collar on indoors anymore even though thats why it was bought haha.

Re: Collars in hot weather
If people do leave collars on their dogs, I hope they get taken off at least at night, or regularly cleaned and groomed under the collar.

Re: Collars in hot weather
Herbie gets all out of sorts if we take his collar off, I do at least a couple of times a week to give him massages of his neck which he loves as we get droopy top lips & eyes rolling back & sideways smile lol lol, he wears it all the time other than that xx
